Alright this skimmer is making me bonkers. I bought an Aqua C Remora Pro with drain fitting and Mag pump over a month ago for my 75 gallon tank because everyone raves about these skimmers. Ever since I bought this thing it's been producing an excess of liquid. I can't even call it skimate at this point. Here's what has happened.
So recently I moved my tank, but two weeks before the break down of the tank, I received the skimmer, so that I could break it in before the move. I set the collection cup at the highest point and it instantly starting producing foam, although it looked like light tea. I thought great at that moment. But half a day later I relized that maybe this wasn't so great since it was filling the whole cup in that time frame. So I'd empty it out every 12 hours thinking that the my previous skimmer really sucked that much and that this Remora was just catching up at the time.
I let it run this way for a week and half, until I contacted Aqua C. They told me at the time that it was just the break in period, that the skimmer was doing what my previous skimmer couldn't do, or that my salinity was to high at 1.025 and told me to give it a little more time to break in and lower my salinity. So I did as told and lowered the salinity to 1.023 and kept with the break in period.
About a week later, I moved the tank to a holding bin until I could take the time to rebuild the tank after my move into my new home. The live rock, corals, and fish lived in the holding bin for about two weeks and all through that time it kept filling the whole collection cup in half a day.
Well last weekend I finally got around to rebuilding the tank. I filled the tank with all new saltwater and about 15 gallons of old water, 40 pounds of new sea floor argonite, and 20 pound bag of Arag-Alive. The old live rock, corals, and fish went back into the tank too. I connected the skimmer but didn't put the collection cup in for a day, since I heard that new saltwater would make skimmers foam like crazy.
By Sunday morning, the water cleared from putting in the new agronite, so I thought it would be alright if I put the collection cup in place that evening. I put the drain hose into a quart size bottle and in about 3 hours it had filled up and spilled over, making a mess on the carpet.
So I put the drain hose to feed back into the sump, thinking that the water was just to new and let it run this way for a week.
Well, this evening I put the drain hose into a five gallon bucket at around 6:00. It's now 9:45, and I kid you not, the bucket is almost 3/4 full.
So that's what's driving me nuts. Before any one asks here's a couple more details I'm sure are coming to mind.
- I don't use any additives what so ever.
- I use Oceanic Salt.
- I feed Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef and Formula Two lightly.
- The saltwater was made with RO water.
- The salinity is now lower than 1.022 because I keep replinshing the water the skimmer drains out.
- The fish and corals are doing fine so far and they seen happy.
So ask away and tell me what I can do to stop the over production of foam. Your advice will greatly be appreciated.
