:) I live in a houseshare, the commentary is from my housemates and a friend that was visiting.. my voice can't be heard in the video... but i dont appreciate the 'bevis and butthead' and other comments, for they have nothing to do with this board or the hobby. I left the audio track in because i wanted the sounds of the mantis's appendages on the crawfishes exoskeleton to be heard. From then i make it clear to them if they would like to watch when im filming, they must shut up. They are reacting this way because they had never seen a mantis shrimp eat before... just how allot of us look at military vehicles.

I thought it might be something like that.
Most people react with that same kind of laughter the first few times they see something extreme like mantis strikes.

yup... i mean, i do enjoy watching my predators eat, but i dont sit there in my chair giggling like a little girl at feeding time. I video tape it for others to see because it is facinating to watch and educational. On the mantis shrimp documentary that is shown on the discovery channel, they show clips of mantis shrimp feeding on live crabs in tanks at the university of berkely california... i doubt they got many complaints from viewers.

The first time I watched the video my sound was turned off and I thought it was interesting; but the commentary does kind of ruin it.

People have posted videos of anglers and such feeding and nobody seemed to mind too much. This had sort of a sleazy quality about it though, and the mantis' tank didn't look too nice...

I'm not running any sound at the moment, either. :|

I guess I'm not like most people, then.
I like this board because it's a place where we can learn advancements in this hobby and better ways to look after the animals we keep.

Somehow this seems like a definite step backward.

keep it respectful, please.

I agree, however, I think you destroy that sentiment with your next sentence:

my problem isn't with the video per se -- it's with the sleaze-factor of watching it while two buffoons cackle in the background.

If you are going to make a plea for civility, I think you should be civil too.

righty, i almost always agree with you, but we *so* diverge here.

as for civility, i was directing my comment about a poster who made a specific remark to *me*... the "buffoons" i mention are not on this board, and as such it's totally appropriate for me to dis them. if they were here, i'd be civil. but they're nameless and faceless, so just like it's fine to call bush a drooling idiot (because he's not here), it's fine to call these guys buffoons because they're not here.

get the distinction? :P

That's cool. Different opinions are good.

I get it. I disagree with you.

I don't think it is ok to call Bush a drooling idiot even if he is not here.

A request for people to act with respect has no foundation if the person making the request follows it with disrespectful comments.

And I find it odd that you would try to convince yourself that being disrespectful is OK when you do it.

At the time you made the statement you had no idea if the people you were disrespecting were here or not.

great, we'll agree to disagree then. i think you're derailing the argument into orthogonal territory to prove a point that i'm failing to see, so i'll let it end here and move on.

but for the record -- i disagree with you on all points, and i find it odd that you're having this reaction.

How can you disagree with a point you are failing to see

No problem - if you wanna go into it pm me or we can start a thread in the sump.

it's cool -- better just to leave this one go most likely, i don't see any upside to arguing further about either the topic at hand or the distinction between buffoons and wussies. :)

as for the sump... ::shudder:: JUST SAY NO!

Come on now. get a grip!! It is a vidoe and the end result is the same One form of life is fed wiht another life form. whether the commentary is there or not all it is is a feedign session. We ALL get enjoyment out of feeding predatory pets, these guys are just a bit more vocal. You get people crying about an animal being fed to another animal. LOL these same types would sooner roll a dolphin back intot he ocean then give a friend a ride to work. Its all a matter of focus animals are here for entertainment food, companionship and education. I know i prefer to be the TOP of the food chain then the bottom. Life is a b*tch then you evolve.

For the record, I have no problem with using live animals to feed others. It's what happens in real life. If people have a problem with that, they're either naive or living in denial.

My problem with the video, as it was originally presented, was that the priority seemed to be entertainment first, feeding the mantis second. The audio backed that up. What life form was to be next, I wondered?

Before I responded, I looked at other postings from chockablock and found what qualified as proper food for the mantis shrimp was whatever made him personally angry (arrowhead crab eating xenia), after which it seemed appropriate to post that video.

Righty, without the audio but with some type of explanation it would have made a world of difference, as I would have thought that it was someone who was properly feeding their mantis shrimp, and like a lot of reefers, was unable to afford a better environment right now.
A piece of PVC pipe in an otherwise bare tank hardly seems like an appropriate environment if someone really was trying to provide for their mantis shrimp.

the arrow crab was given to me, i gave it a temporary home in my frag tank, but removed it as i saw it eating the xenia... then i fed it to my mantis. $1 feeder crawfish or $10 arrow crab.. both are ideal foods for a stomatopod.

the stomatopod was being held in that enclosure temporarily.

This is its current arrangement.

post-19-1091733023.jpg

1/4 acrylic tank. 12x12x36, mix of arragonite sand, crushed coral and large rubble (as reccomended by dr. roy caldwell as ideal substrate for this species), dual 1" drains into 10g sump with prism pro skimmer, mag 7 return pump, heater and activated carbon, 20lbs figi live rock, dim moonlighting.

coupled with dilligent care and regular feedings, I have gone beyond what is required to care for my mantis shrimp.

The concern is great. I think we all would have been better served by getting questions about the animal, its environment and its representations answered before any accusations regarding intent and husbandry.
People in the reefing world, myself included, are to quick to condemn without first gathering information. In this case, after getting the info it turns out that there really isn't all that much to complain about. Happily so!
