NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck dozens of cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street was shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected.

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded planes at all three New York area airports because the blackout affected security screening facilities. The FAA reported planes also were grounded at the Toronto airport. The airports were operating on backup power, officials said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg confirmed the outage was not related to terrorism or an accident.

"The good news is, Con Ed's facilities have shut down automatically, which they're programmed to do," he said. "No damage was done to the Con-Ed facility."

Bloomberg said it was unknown how long the outage may last.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

"We are going to have a situation where people are going to have to walk a long distance. They need to be careful," Bloomberg said. "Our advice is to go home, open up your windows, drink a lot of liquids."

Good luck to all those without power as we speak. Montreal is OK so far. Hopefully it will not last long. Good time to link to Rich Durso's article regarding power outages.

Who knows if this problem may spread. I just filled my freezer with water bottles, the heat has been terrible here.

Say good bye to my reef. :(

Try to keep the water moving if you can. Use a wooden spoon if you have to. Some LFS's also sell battery powered air pumps that would help you out immensely.

Rob, your reef may be fine, depends on how long the outage is, how big your tank is, if it's glass or acrylic (acrylic imsulates better, against your nasty heat wave), your current bioload. Don't get into panic-mode just yet.

I was out for about 10 hours. Had a car battery and inverter sitting on my kitchen table running some powerheads during the outage. :) I think everything made it...

The news is soooo stupid. Not (2) two seconds after this occured the news programs already labeled it:

The outage of 2003!

I heard them say it on the headlines. I laughed so hard I had to run to the bathroom and try and not pee on the lenolium floor. They will do anything to create a major drama in our petty lives.

I picked up a used APC smart-UPS computer UPS a few months ago. It's batteries are dead, but last night I surfed and found a place to buy the replacement batteries for pretty cheap. After reading all this related to power fail, I am definitely going to get the UPS fixed and wire that into my system when I begin setting it up (hopefully next week!) :D

This was the largest power blackout in world history. I don't think it's an overstatement to call it "The outage of 2003!".

California has it's own man-made energy crisis called "Gray Davis".

I just made a detailed post on another thread above, but in summary, after 14 hours of blackout, all is well with my tank. Fish stress noted this morning due to a very rapid rise in pH from 8.1 to 8.4 in a very short time when the lights came back on. I stirred my tank every 15 minutes and manually recharged my surge tank every half hour or so. Temp drop from 80 to 72. No negative effect on corals 8O . I hope everyone involved fares well through this. Keep stirring.

Well my Nano is still out 24 hours later. This sucks because I already lost everything once this year to the ice storms. I CANNOT aford to start over. A bonus is that it is also the hottest week of the year thus far in MI. I have ice packs floting in my tank and am stiring like a mad man @%$@#$@$$@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God Hates me, I know it.

Eric.
Everything surprisingly good as my tank was approaching extremes in temp and pH swing. At this point (lights on) tank looks like nothing ever happened. We're talkin' 17 of the last 24 hours with no power, except my wooden spoon.

Of note- the pH spiked from 8.1 to 8.4 and then normalized at about 8.3, all within 3 hours of lights on. Fish were very "antsy" early this morning during this time. Fine now.

It looks like the corals could have cared less despite the huge swing in temp and pH and also zero light during this time. (My probes have always been on batteries.)

I was waiting for disaster in the tank, it never happened. I guess it was the crossed fingers last night.

Lucky people. I was out for 26 hours. In fact, I just got my power back on. 'The outage of 2003' is a little geeky, but it's hardly an understatment. :)

Just got my power back on. It was out for 27 hours. The only thing i lost was a cleaner shrimp. Temp. went down to 74 degrees....tank is in the basement. Corals did very well. I used the wooden spoon too. I was actually boiling water, and putting it in plastic bottles to float in the tank to raise the temp. Just goes to show you that your tank can take quite a bit, and still make it. Now another day or two, I might have been in a little more trouble.
