Okay, RC is down today... So, I'm jumping ship and coming over here. I guess I was always going to RC b/c members were very helpful for me when I was setting up my tank. It seems like I'll be frequenting both boards now... Probably will be over here more often in the future due to RC slowness.

RC has something like 7 pages of active threads every day. That is probably the most I have found, and that is a lot of activity. Even on my 56K dialup, I don't find that I have much to complain about. It is slow. It times out. I double post. Waaaa.
They had a whole thread on alternatives to RC which was not closed. I went out and checked some of the alternatives out, and added one to my list to visit more regularly. But many other boards would have taken that off ASAP. One I visit would not have let it stand for 5 seconds.
Reef.org was the first board I found. Then I found ReefCentral though this board. Then a couple of others. I am always trying to learn, and we can learn from the different people who frequent them.
If I have to wait a bit, then it takes me back to my childhood of wandering through the library reference section. I learned to be patient then. Maybe all you youngsters who never had to do this need to chill out? If you are older, think back and appreciate how much easier it is to lounge in front of the computer instead of dealing with the snotty librarian.
People have taken for granted the ease with which we can get top rated info now, for free!
I would think that the sheer number of Forums at RC would slow their servers down. Does anyone know for sure?
I also find that all of those different forums, although I appriciate the idea behind them, make for a time consuming visit. Just too many choices!

I've been on RC since it started and on Reefs.org for about the same amount of time. Hope RC sorts things out -the archives on both of these sites are very valuable for doing searches on almost anything.
I'm lucky as I'm on Eastern time and can get on RC in the morning before the rest of the continent is trying to log in.

This was key for me finding RdO, call me silly but I am still reluctant to join RC because I can't just bowse there without registering.
Why can't you? You can't read a select few of the forums without registering, but what you can read is still far more posts per day than anywhere else.

I'm not sure what I was doing before, I think I was following some links from RdO to threads in RC that were a topic of debate at the time, and for some reason those were always the "select forums" I couldn't see. It was a bit of a turn off, and I never really looked into it because being new to reef BBs, I was finding lots of information here.
So, I just did a bit of poking around and so far you are right, I got into some RC forums, and, I'm glad to be wrong. I'll be doing some lurking over there in the near future.

If you supported them through Paypal, by all means complain to ReefCentral admin all you want. Don't support their sponsors. It is a choice. And you never ever have to go back to RC if you don't want to. I am not forcing anyone to waste as much time as I do bouncing from board to board.
Yesterday my radio station went out for some time. I support some of their sponsers. I was disappointed, 'cause I like their shows. But I figured there was some sort of problem and they were working on it. I turned to another station. Today I went back to the other. They claimed their power grid was attacked by Amish terrorists. A good and reasonable answer.
Maybe someone is going after RC? There are a lot of people who don't like "our kind." All I know is that they keep coming up with far more complicated answers than I can comprehend or related to, even though someone actually posted a question on my message board last month.
Now RC has had this trouble for some time. But I am quite certain they are working on things. I won't stop using their sponsors. I won't stop checking to see what is going on here, there and everywhere. If any are slow or down, I come back later. Nothing to lose sleep over.
But I am pretty certain that the majority of people with 'snotty complaints' have not sent them a dime.
And next time allow me the courtesy of getting my post up before quoting me

Now, because of this news that it is now healthy, I think it is time for a beer. Intoxicating.
Just visited RC and everything seems to be operating. Maybe even a little faster than before. Hope so. Very glad that all the data is intact. The metaphor of the Library of Alexandria is appropriate.
I concur wholeheartedly with Ophiuroid and MC. Thanks for putting it so eloquently. Is it just that I'm getting old, or does anyone else remember detente'? :wink:
