Reef Central has been a bit discouraging lately with the slow pages coming up and the "cannot find server" error coming up half the time. I do enjoy the crew over there as well as the crew here. I have frequented both boards for a few years now and they are both wonderful places to get info and bounce ideas around. I hope they make some changes soon or I will be forced to frequent their board less and less :(

If I can't get in or get sick of the slow response time from reefcentral.com, this the first place I go. I tend to get more responses to my questions at reefcentral, but the performance is so freaking horrendous unless I'm using it at 2 am Pacific time! I know it's not my connection since I have a T1 at work and cable modem access at home. Someone needs to go in and ramp up the hardware and software on that site! I've read a lot of posts there how it's not that easy, but they're losing so many people because of the slow access there!

I started at RDO and began looking for another BB(RC)to meet my addiction level. I look forward to the 1st and 15th of the month when the online mags are posted. Both places are important due to the knowledge base each has. Its wonderful to talk to authors, curators, manufacturers, tinkerers, and experienced hobbyists. Where else can one receive information within days of asking a question. I used to think that LFS and print mags were the only place to receive reliable info. I am very thankful both sites exist. I hope for RC's speedy recovery and hope RDO's immunity to the slow bug is high.

I don't think so. This message was something totally new. Database error. I did try the tech. staff mail link it provided, mail returned as server not found. I would say the site crashed. Let's hope archives were backed up! Although, as much as I like the place, from what I've seen I would bet that never got handled either.

It's been down for awhile this morning. I hope it's down because they're installing the new servers and not because it crashed and they lost everything...

30,000 members says a whole hec of a lot for a bb. I remember when Larry got PO'd with AL and decided along with others to start that bb. I've been there since day one but its a pain in the butt to visit now days.

Seems to be a lot more people logged in here lately! Is it you reef central folks who don't like waiting 5 minutes for a thread to come up, to post a reply?
Not to be a butthead but that is a mighty snotty thing to say.
I enjoy both boards but happily admit that RC is THE place for new reefers to go to get immediate answers to their questions.
The reason RC is suffering from thes problems is because it is infinitely more popular than reefs.org (this is not meant to belittle reefs.org in anyway it is a simple numeric fact). The number of posts on RC everyday, compared to any other reef BB, is astronomical.

You laugh at the server/bandwidth problems they have, but for what reason?
RC is a victim of its own success. Hopefully it will get sorted out shortly.

AFTERALL...if all of us RC members come over here just what do you think the bandwidth here will be like!?!?

I didn't think it was snotty. The guy noticed more people logging in here. He put two and two together and wondered if the RC problems had anything to do with it... RC is slow right now. More people are logging in here. Most people would assume they were related, Tex just wanted to get some input.

At least that's my take on it. One of the things I like about this board is that it *seems* like there is less flaming here because everyone tends to know each other a little bit better than at RC.

You are correct. Everyone is welcome, but if everyone comes, we'll slow down as well. It's not a matter of bandwidth, we should have plenty of that, it's a matter of cpu/ram on the server, as these bulletin boards run PHP scripts that access MySQL databases. We'll do the best we can to keep things running smoothly. As I've said recently, we've made some changes to accomodate as many as we can now, and have also just purchased 2 new servers, both consdiderably more powerful than the single machine that presently runs reefs.org and Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine. We expect to have those online sometime in late February or March.

In the meantime, we hope that RC gets well soon, we hope that you all continue to visit reefs.org, and most importantly, I will not tolerate messages that are derogatory or inflamatory towards reefs.org or any other forum that tries, as we do, to provide a free, quality resource to the reefkeeping community.

One of the benefits of RC was the Reef Club Forums. Does Reefs.org have something similar? We can move the whole club over here! :D

That is exactly what I am talking about.
Why revel in the problems of a community that is providing a similar service as here. Both are generally 'non-profit' and have dedicated themselves to this beautiful hobby.
There is no reason for smart-arsed comments.
The loss of such an abundance of wealth, in terms of archived knowledge, would be tremendous if RC suffered an irrecoverable crash.
Akin to reefkeeping's Library of Alexandria burning down.
