Hairy Mushrooms Must Go

I made a very big mistake about 2 years ago. I purchased a small piece of live rock with about 4 small hairy mushrooms on it. I had no idea how big these things could get and how fast they multiply. Any ideas as to how I can get them out of my tank.

I don't know why anyone would want these things. They multiply like rabbits and anything they touch pulls away or ends up dead. If I cut them off the rock with a knife, will any part left behind regenerate? The guy at the local pet store told me to inject them with calcium hydroxide. There are too many to try that.

I cut some off then scrubbed the rock in a separate bucket of saltwater. So far they haven't come back. It's been about three weeks.

Hey Guys,
I'd love to help you, but I got stung real bad about a year ago by a guy who promised something similar. I had sold him a very large beautiful Tridacna clam that had overgrown my tank and he never paid me. He said it never arrived but FEDEX showed me a copy of a receipt that he had signed. I swore I would never get into this type of thing again, nothing against any of you. Besides I'd be afraid that cutting them off the rock might leave them dead by the time they arrived and I wouldn't feel right about charging anyone for a dead shipment.

shipping should only be $20 which I would be happy to pay for all those hairy shrooms

I may be wrong here but if I am correct there is a very easy solution.

In the first part of the thread the focus was on "getting them out" and even talk of killing them off.

The mushrooms will survive being cut of the rock and shipped if cut at the base.

Humu can prepay the UPS or FedEx and give them the location of the pick up as long as he knows the weight. You need only weigh a bag of water.

If you are planning on selling them than of course this is all mute, but in the begining it was killing some unwanted mushrooms.

yeah, sell the damn things, why kill it. it cost over 20 per rock with only 3 shrooms at my lfs. i love those guys and can only afford one piece of rock last month. im planning to fill my whole tank with them.

after you cut them off, you can inject the remaining tissue with kalk or stick a copper wire in it to really kill it. just my opinion.

I know that shrooms are pretty hardy, but I wonder how well they would fare if shipped immediately after being cut. I would think they would be more likely to survive if given a few days to heal before shipping. I have tried many different methods of fragging mushrooms and the best way I have found is to let the frag sit in some course sand for a few days. The cut heals and it attaches to the sand. Then you can superglue the sand to a rock.
