Here is a pic of our new 300 gallon setup, what do you all think? The stand is steel and was built by us, it is lag bolted into the garage floor. The tank will end up being a display tank when we open our store next January so we didnt need anything too fancy for now.

P.S. The lights are being delivered today so I will post more pics when it is finished.

Howdy,

Is that a Euroreef CS6-2 or 3 in the sump? SWEET!!! Also, what size sump is that

It looks like a 150g tank, I wish I had room under my tank for that much sump.

What kind of lighting did you order?

One last question, how are you going to move that monster to your store once it is completley setup?

Scott.

The sump is 140g and the skimmer is a cs8-4 euro reef (8x36 inches). I just put half of the lights on yesterday, I am running 4 400w 20k halides with pfo ballasts

As far as moving the tank we use large rubermaid tubs and a big truck.

Looks very impressive. But if I might make a suggestion. Remake that stand, it looks great but get the legs of the stand nned to be under the edge of the tank not where you have it. That's where the actual weight of the tank should be distributed from. I think you might be looking for trouble down the road.

The stand is made from 1/4 inch wall 2 inch box tubing, It would be good for at least 10k lbs. The weight is distributed over the whole stand and the stand is lag bolted into the ground.

Thanks for the concern but if you saw it in person you would see how OVER built the stand is. If it ever failed I would drink a full collection cup of skimmate from my Euro-Reef.

Thanks for the feedback!

The stand LOOKS scary to me! Can't really tell if the ends are supported. This could get UGLY!

is that 2" angle frame around the tank setting on the square stock??? if so i think there will be no problems. that stand will hold, i would be more concerned about the concrete than the stand. looks great keep the pic come on the progress!

Dean,

You nailed it. It is 2 inch angle around the tank on 2 inch box tubing.

Just for the record we have a good 40 years of combined experiance working with steel and during that time we have built 6 steel commercial fishing boats ranging in size from 50 to 65 feet so the stand is not just put together by a bunch of rookies.

Again thanks for the concern but I am sure the stand is just fine. I was hoping to get some feedback about the rest of the setup, like the size of the sump vs. the tank size, lighting recs, skimmer choice Etc.

Thanks to all,
Bob.

Thereefzone:

I second or third (whatever) the stand a-ok, that steel combo, with that design does result in a increase of shear force at the points where the legs attach, but the steel is what you have to worry about bending, and it won't. Not with that little of weight. Anyway a 2"x4" can hold somewhere around 1400 lbs before shearing, yes it deflects but that's adifferent story. Sorry for ranting TRZ.

What would i do for equipment????? Hmmmm???
Well, some dolphin pumps would fit the bill, depending on what over-turn rate you want for the tank. The sump is perfect, the bigger the better. Maybe add a 55g mangrove "fuge" later? I'd definitely go with a 400 watt Iwasaki with MV ballast every 2' w/ URI VHO actinics to accent. As for skimming, search for "myreef" in the search user category of this forum. I know people are tired of me saying this, but i think he should get our business. He does great work and i've heard very reasonable. If your a skilled wood worker, then build one yourself. If your not keen on myreef designs, or DIY, then shoot for Precision Marine or ETS. That is if your not happy with your current skimmer choice.

Oh, where did you get those powerheads? They look very similar to the Gemini's.

HTH and good luck with your future business endeavor,
DW302

lunchbucket,

I guess we will just have to wait and see on the heat issue, I am hoping that the large volume of water will help keep the temp swings down but I really dont know how it will work out. I have a 1/4hp chiller but I dont think it would work out with such a large tank so I dont plan to run it.

Has anyone found that larger tanks are better for temp swings?
