I might as well share my recent experiment.

I'd been running a beckett on my 180 for about 2 yrs using a MAK4. It performed great. I recently decided to put a second skimmer on system - so I bought a downdraft skimmer (I'm not mentioning any names). I installed the downdraft and retained the beckett on the system. After the downdraft was broken in, the becket shut down. I kept them both on line for a couple of weeks - becket never foamed up again.

This could be for many different reasons. But, fact is, the downdraft is more efficient than the beckett when comparing the two models I have. Both are rated for close to the same system sizes.

Just thought this was interesting......

Since we are rapidly veering from the topic at hand let me digress.

mwm6 brings to light an important topic that is often overlooked by the hobbiest. Necessity. Do we need a better injector? Would we be willing to pay an additional 1/3-2/3rds the cost to cover the R&D to design an injector to work on a fraction of the electricity? And what do we do when our supper efficient skimmer shuts down? Most will come back and complain that it isn't skimming consistently.

The question becomes not if a better injector can be designed, but what is the motivation for a manufacturer to do so? The majority of hobbiest do not care about the efficiency of their skimmer. They simply want a device that plugs in and produces gunk to show them it is functioning. Some do care about the power bill. But in all honesty will you notice a big difference between a 100w and a 200w skimmer pump on your monthly statement? Probably not.

I think this is a case of well enough and the ends don't justify the means that would be required. $.02

AS I developed my own beckett skimmer, its funny what happened to me. The down draft skimmer quit after a day and my new skimmer kicked butt. I let them both run for a week and the etss never produced a drop. Can anyone explain this. I have my own idea's.

I suppose, it's called marketing.
