Phosphate most likely high in the water column, or the rock is phosphate laden. Either way I would check phosphate readings (tests are not accurate at low levels but you get a ballpark idea). Running GFO is a good first step.

I ran into that last month,,GFO reactor worked for me, and make sure you buy more than 1 bottle b/c the first time my phosphates were so high that I used the whole bottle in 2 days and even though it brought my color on that test card down 3 or 4 squares in color, the output started testing the same as my tank so I had to replace the media. Now that I'm stable the media lasts longer.
Also, in my research on this I read up on a few people getting low test readings for phosphate and it was because that hair was eating it up, so they couldn't know exactly how bad their problem was...hope this helps.

Granular Ferric Oxide.. people run it in reactors so the top layer tumbles. It reduces phosphates in your system. You can look on Bulk Reef Supply or any other supply website they have info and videos

HI,

I have Green Hair Algae growing...I have been monitoring my Nitrates and Nitrites and they are at 0 so i am so confused as to why the Green Hair Algae is growing?

ANY INSIGHT AS TO WHY?

DAN MAN NYC REEFER
Please explain confusion.
Do you know what causes algae to flourish?
Also not likely to have 0 nitrates so something is amiss.
Nothing wrong with advice given so far but if you don't understand the whole picture you will continue to have problems. You best bet is to start reading about it.

Unless your tank is experiencing a massive outbreak of algae growth, it might be OK to do nothing new right away and wait to see how things develop. The growth might stop on its own.

Maybe a picture of the extent of the alga growth would help others to render a "panic/don't panic" opinion. Plus I don't think anyone gets tired of seeing another reef aquarium.

Good luck!
