one thing people fail to realize is why would a store give you the same credit amount for something ? i mean even if the store sells same thing for a 100 i can see some credit, but your bringing in a fish or coral that for all the store knows you paid next to nothing for. and the store takes all the risk of it dying or bringing in disease. your taking it to a store cause either you dont want to deal with the hassle of trying to sell or it havent been able to sell it. this is no different then the automotive business. they arent going to give you the same or close to the same on your trade in as they are going to sell it for

Out here I can trade for store credit for something I need at that LFS.

This thread was for trading with other reefers.. Lets not get into store talk.. Lets keep it a great thread ;)

OK, no more store talk for me.

Now for this trading thing you guys/gals are talking about...... I never traded so I have questions for the people that have.

Are there any rules that you stick by? When trading, does the coral need to be equal or more in value.

I've read that it is best to create and have an inner circle for frag swapping. Don't really get the inner circle thing. If you see a coral that is for trade, than just trade. You should still quarantine the coral as if you purchased it from a lfs. You just never know.

I would love to create an inner circle and stop blowing money away.

I have already proven that some of us are taking advantage of others by preying on the fact that this hobby makes you a compulsive shopper. Yesterday in Queens someone sold me a 15 polyp Sunny D zoa or paly (whatever they are) frag for $20. If I am not mistaken there are hobbyist selling them for $5 to $10 per polyp.

So my point is this, to trade it's probably easiest to find people near you and dont be picky with values, if you have a coral and he has a coral and you want a piece and he wants a piece just brake a piece of and trade.

If people try to trade in value then it will not work bc folks will be to hung up on trying to justify the value of the trade, who cares if you paid $200.00 for your chalice and I paid $30.00 for my favia, if you want a silly frag of my favia and I like the chalice, trade and be done with it.

I think some of us would be able to stop lying to our families and to ourselves if we formed inner circles and traded instead of buying and lying.

Someone should look into setting up trading groups by County.

I recently traded with another reefer on this site. He was giving away some stuff he didn't need and I asked if I could take it. And since I'm at his house, asked if he was open to trading as well.

To be honest, I don't know some of the sames of my corals and I only search what others were selling them for so I know a ballpark value to them. When it came to trading, we both were happy (i know i am) and I did not even take into consideration the total value of my corals vs the value of their corals. In the end, I got some free stuff he didn't need and some new corals I did not have.

Everyone can wish this and wish that. I have a 90 gal with LPS and Softies, the stuff i can handle. I live in close proximity to a reefer who dropped by for a visit. He was interested in one thing in my packed tank. I went by his place, most of his stuff are high end. Jason Fox etc. Thousands of dollar worth of stuff. He had a story for every piece. I would love to trade but he's in a different league. He's not interested in my stuff which i love dearly. If i really wanted something which i did, i would have to put up some $$$ or shutup... Now you have 10 people in a so called trading circle no one is buying anything. One day everyone will have all the corals in this circle. Just saying. Then what???

This is a very very GOOD point. He liked something you have but he won't go down to your reefing level to make a trade. So sad......
But could also be a good thing. You could have given him a frag of your coral with some money. This means that you got the coral a lot cheaper than what he might of paid for it.

This is what I wanted to hear. If you are in a group or the inner circle say. And forget value of each piece for moment. If you did have a tank that crashed or power failure. Won't it be nice that group can start you up and at least save you some of cost to recover.
Like your friend if he lost all is expensive coral. Thousands of dollars. But if he had a community that maybe if something did happen. Your frag group or inner circle can help them. So that person that help them can return favor without spending as much money.

MR members have stepped up to help members in dilemma on numerous occasions. I don't know on what level but they have stepped up. I don't know what would happen if i had a crash.

I chopped my tank up multiple times for friends that had to start over.

Nothing expected in return as they would do the same for me.

Why be in one trading circle? Be in multiple trading circles, encourage the people you trade with to do the same thing. There will always be new corals to share.

What saddens me about the practice to start fragging as soon as a coral makes a growth large enough to be considered "one inch" is that we never do get to see how these "Limited edition" corals look once they have developed into a colony.

On a side note fragging/giving vs selling. When I lived in Europe, I was giving all my frags. Simply because well, it was that or almost throwing away (fast growth in a nano...). The problem is, sometimes even free corals seem to be too expensive for some folks. I had a guy pick up a 3" of Montipora digitata, branching nicely etc, and say "oh that's all?" After that I started putting price on things, as a way to "cut the sentiments" between my tank and the piece (the expression is from a friend).

I must say with the amount of flaking I see when I am giving something on DBTC, sometimes I almost want to ask people to paypal me something in advance to make sure they will show up. Making people wait and not coming = not cool.

I was hypothetically speaking. Read the entire thread.

What i find funny is people are cheap where there is no need. If you buy, sell, trade or give away it takes time, energy and money to get the product to market and i'll leave it at that.

Trading is the best thing. i Trade with a guy in new jersey that comes down every so often 1 time a month and We talk threw text and he asks if i have anything and i ask him if he has stuff. i just God a really nice Monti from him and a really nice (ORA blue German DIGI.) this thing is delicate Broke it while trying to mounth it to the rock work. But its okay now i have a new piece to Place else where on the rock.

Just saying, the reason why i dont trade with allot of people is cause i dont no them well enough to take in any of there frags, i dont want to not know the person and bring something bad home into the tank and have problems with my tank as he did his. just as stated before, We need to start talking more amongst us reefers and make friends, not just spending money.

Lets say just like stated before someone said about Buying something and Fraging it up a little to recoop some money but not making profit. Let say we see a good deal on a piece of coral but its really expensive and still buy it let say 400$ expensive SPS Colony.
Now you bring this colony home itsssssssssss wayyyyyyyy too big for your tank, you Frag a few peices off Text the people you no and sell 2-3" Frags to them for 10$ea and even trade some pieces and give allot of them to your friends for them to grow it out in there tank. Now im not making nearly any of the money back maybe just 100$ to have some Money for saltwater and R/O water and other stuff may needed in the tank maybe more coral, But is that really a wrong thing to do?

I think not, cause now you have the colony that no one was able to buy and now your spreading it to other reefers that are happy with the size and now there able to afford it, i dont think thats a bad thing to do at all. im sure you guys dont either.

i can say this and add my 2 cents, when i was just a hobbyist i loved trading, when i was importing and selling, i sold for hobby prices, i also loved getting trades and would give sometimes 3-1 for a nice frag brought my way, the biggest thing was to build up my personal collection of saught after corals, what i did was set them aside and just let them grow i didnt frag the frag nor did i turn around and sell that for a crazy price, i love this hobby and want to continue doing what i do.. which is keeping my hands wet and always finding new and interesting pieces without paying an arm and a leg.

rob i agree with you 100%, but i can also say this just bc you are spending 400$ of said colony from a LFS, doesnt mean itll be pest/disease free, weather you get from a local reefer or lfs i would dip and treat frag regardless, that should allow you to open your channels and trade more freely without worry of contamination..
