My LFS out here gives credit for corals, even for macro. Never had an issue.
Why isn't there more demand on trading Frags!

i have met and traded with some great reefers from mr. i have also met with some not so great dirtbags from mr. i choose to deal with those i consider friends and ignore the dirtbags. if you hang around here awhile, you'll figure out who are the ones you should and shouldn't deal with.
pretty much the same with the advices. there are times i actually laughed out loud while reading about the really bad advices from some members here. i do find it entertaining though. i love mr.....:thrash:

I don't want to insult anyone but I was insulted with a local lfs that I spent a lot of money at his store to tell me that the corals that I was trying to get some store credit are a dime a dozen and he don't want any . One thing he forgot is that he is the one that sold me that coral for $89 a year before and he continued to say that he pays $9 for a colony. I drove to Greenwich aquaria and they gladly gave $95 store credit without asking. Read a lot of opinions on this thread and I think there is absolutely nothing wrong to pay for a frag from a fellow reefer cause maybe I have nothing to trade to him and if I do then he will pay me for my frag.
Im not even gonna start blasting a name. But i wanted to trade our black ice clown to a LFS in Westburry i think it was "" . We paid 100$ for the clown last year. They still sell for like 60-80$ or more certain places. It was a premium black ice, i asked them if i can get store credit they told me 10$... i said at least 30$.. They said they cant do that i told them if i trade it in i dont want the price getting jacked up to 90-125$ cause thats what they sell there clowns at half the time, They said i cant do that. i told them i want it to go to a good home they said they cant guarantee anything.... so i took it else ware got 40$ store credit and There keeping it at the STORE in there display tank and there not even selling it to make profit, NOW THATS A GOOD STORE, Pets WearHouse thank you for giving her a good home. I know its in a very good home and we visit her from time to time. shes getting bigger and bigger in that big tank shes in.
but over all i was very insulted.. Don't go there much anymore.

unfortunately distance keeps me away from trading much more. I would love to but all the great tanks are in new york somewhere. Thats a long distance for me to travel. I usually wait to our great frag swaps to buy and trade or sell frags that i have broke off the colonies when doing maintenance. I also do not frag frags.... It hinders growth because the coral has to use its energy in repairing itself where you fragged. Great thread so far

wish you were a taddddd bit closer or maybe on this side of the world of the 5 boros.! not 2 bridges away! NIce to see you in person at the swap. Maybe next time we meet you can own a zoa frag so i can add it to your collection! and your wife wont have to worry about your spending

I think the point is this, to get to know someone well enough to trade healthy worth while frags with takes a long time.
Just like buying used fish tanks, selling coral has become a big business that everyone wants and thinks they can set up and be successful at it hence no one is really trading.
If someone wants to sell me a frag for $5/$10/$15 of something they purchase large and fragged or grew in their tank I say thank you. I welcome it because I cannot afford to be paying $50 for 1 inch frags, it's a damn large tank and to fill it would mean 100 frags at $50 each would be ridiculously insane.
Trading comes from making friends that are in the hobby, buy a large piece for whatever amount or grow it and frag it to trade or recoup a little bit.
When the 197 1 inch frags that I have grow which at the growth rate of sps should be about hmmmm 2 to 4 years I will frag and sell for dirt cheap and or trade if I am fortunate enough to continue meeting addicts me, problem is that the few real people I have met already have a piece of the 197 frags i have, makes it hard to trade.
People are not trading as much because the internet has made it more challenging and ambitious at the same time.
To the OP's point and in hopes this does not deviate from the original point...
If we want to trade we need to make friends.
If you want to be sure you are getting a really rare piece visit a reputable store and or established vendor so you don't get robbed and do your homework, if you really want a ORA Jason Fox Sexy Corn One of Kind Rare make sure you truly know what you are buying.
Trading I guess will come when all these darn 1 and 2 inch frags grow and in case folks did not know, corals will double their size in 6 to 12 months IF you are lucky so your 1 inch frag may not be ready to frag in say not even 2 years, unless you know how to buy cultured corals for cheap.
Dont fall for the hype and if anyone wants to trade hit me up in 2 to 3 years or sooner, if I can figure out how to live with lying to people about hype, origin, rarity and bla bla bla bla.

one thing people fail to realize is why would a store give you the same credit amount for something ? i mean even if the store sells same thing for a 100 i can see some credit, but your bringing in a fish or coral that for all the store knows you paid next to nothing for. and the store takes all the risk of it dying or bringing in disease. your taking it to a store cause either you dont want to deal with the hassle of trying to sell or it havent been able to sell it. this is no different then the automotive business. they arent going to give you the same or close to the same on your trade in as they are going to sell it for

So what you are saying is that all the fish and corals that the lfs get are disease and pest free?
