With parameters like that, how do you not have undesirable algae growth and corals that are opened up not shriveling/dying? Something doesn't add up here.

that's cause i think his test kits are faulty. THats why API sucks. Also how long did he take to take that picture were the vials sitting around? cause they get darker and darker the more they sit around. SO might not bee that bad. This thread is not pointless. just saying imo. if anything give the guy some tips to relay back to his friend to help out with the problem he has.

im sure if you or a friend were having problems you would want to know :)

I think your comment is pointless.... just saying :) its a thread about someone who has killed OVER 300 fish + OVER 100 different corals.. He refuses to take anyone's advice... But still has the nerve to say that he doesn't understand why his fish are dying..... it may not contain much information on the hobby but it sure is funny!! :)

Just out of curiosity, where/how are filter socks supposed to be cleaned then?
well the way I do/was told to do it from my LFS is soak them in bleach over night.... then the next day wash them out thoroughly with hot water and let them sit for at least a day before you use them again.... the washer machine has tons of soaps and cleaners in it that could leach into your tank... Bleach pretty much disappears when diluted in water and left to dry... Plus the washer destroys the socks....

API kits are ok for things like pollution (minus phosphates), during a cycle, where you have outrageous values like here.

Is there no way to convince him that there is something wrong with his filtration? (that seems to be the main issue for me, unless he is letting fish rot in the tank, or overfeeding)

ps: a lot of people wash their socks in the washer (including myself, though I run a rinse before) without any issues.

he is one of them type of people that everything he does is right and no one can tell him different....I just stop in to take a death toll and for a good laugh :) he used to not even have a sump.... he had a tom filter... it took me a while to convince him to get one.... once he did he ran it on the side of his tank on the floor next to the main entrance of his store,... while he was away on vaca I took it upon myself to drain his tank bench press it over the sand and move the sump underneath.... fixed all his rock took out all of his unnecessary equipment made a dosing chart and a feeding chart for him.... the tank was starting to run right and levels were coming down.... he returned and didn't follow anything I said and now the tank is back where it was if not even worse... stuff dies everyday... oh by the way he feeds his tank everyday about 8 cubes of food + 6 silver slides... as far the socks I was told not to do it like that... I am sure you have way more experience in the hobby as me so I believe in what you say and maybe I will give it a shot! :) thanx for the tip! see this thread isn't that pointless :P lol

Many people wash their filter socks in the washing machine. As long as you do an extra rinse cycle and don't use detergent it should not be a problem.

Isn't there detergent left over from every wash? so im sure there is a tad of detergent on the socks IMO, we have never used the same filter sock always brand new when ever we do a water change a new sock goes on. If you dont use detergent what do you use to wash them? cant you then just rinse them under water ? just asking some questions.

i have washed my filter socks in the washing machine for years with no problems.
If he has that much money to blow on fish why doesn't he just pay some one to maintain the tank for him would be cheaper and more humane then killing every thing. or the next time he goes on vaction just take the tank down and sell it on him.

LMAO!!! he is on vaca now! I was going to take all his fish out and bring them to my LFS!! he placed a order from saltwater fish for 15 new fish!! I told the guy not to ship them out until he is back!! he likes to blame his employees at his store when his fish die! CRAZY!

as far as the socks im going to stick to the way I do it.. like rob said there has to be a little but of detergent left over in the washer makes me a little nervous... if I had money like ROB I would just get new ones every 2 weeks when I do my water change... but I don't so I guess im stuck washing them in bleach...

Hey Rob!! :) im with you on the detergent! wish I had to money to replace my socks like you I reuse my at least 3 times each then replace them.... you can just rinse them if you have enough pressure to get all the dirt out...
