This morning's update is encouraging. The tank looks noticeably better --less cloudy and less stinky. I think the mass die-off is over. I can now get a better sense of which pieces, may, in part at least make it. My revised carnage total is now closer to 60% which is still awful, but better than 80%.

I think small regular WC's and aggressive carbon is the route to take from here on out.
A bit more optimistic about things than I was last night.

That is great news considering. Sending positive vibes toward "The" Pratt Reef as it is one of the best looking reefs around and I have a 110% faith in you making a full recovery. Saw your clams and a few of your pieces of SPS yesterday...they broke my heart...can't imagine how you're feeling. :(

Damm, Sorry to hear that. I know the feeling. From what I have read and experienced, corals can tolerate the heat way better than the cold.
Are you running a lot of halides? Why a chiller in the winter time?

Corals can handle lower temperatures better than higher. If this tank had a degree change half of what it went down to on the upside, the entire tank would have been soup by the time the first person got into the office Monday morning.

Things are stable this morning with no signs of further coral decline or signs of issues with the fish. The tank is still a little cloudy, but not much and I can see some of the surviving corals beginning to extend polyps a bit. There is always a bit of a delayed reaction in some things, but I'd say the crisis part of this is over.

Good to hear Randy. Once things settle are you going to start stocking SPS again? How are your pieces holding up in Vince's tanks?

Once things settle I will re-scape a bit---as James pointed out now that the coral is gone you can see that the original aquascape is actually pretty nice-- then yes start restocking coral. I still envision a largely Acro dominated display, only a nicer one :) I've already gotten MANY offers of coral donations from MR folks and beyond, so when the time comes, acquiring awesome coral isn't going to be an issue.

I think the coral that Vince is holding is not doing well for the most part, but that is not surprising.

Very sorry to hear this Randy, hope you were still able to enjoy your vacation with your family in light of the terrible news......

I remember when I had both my tanks running and whenever my wife mentioned vacation i would cringe and think "but who's going to watch my tanks?".

Good luck on the rebuild, you have an entire community behind you! :)

randy we should think of adding a second temp controller in case the chiller or the heaters fail to shut off on a tank that size its not a big deal just the stat
