Chris there is one that runs on AC power and switches over to battery power if you experience a power loss but then you have a bubbler running in your tank all of the time and you have a faster evap problem.

tru, but the evap happens only in my sump not main tank, would it still be a problem? do you happen to have a link for that product? I am kinda leaning towards that new Cyber LCD UPS, it looks impressive..although am curious if anyone has any success or failures with them?!? :splitspin

I use a ups now and I am definately gonna use the marine or car bat mod that fry described if I can be sure it will be safe in my living room 'cause my condo is small and FULL!! All you need to do is to power your return pump and or a chiller for an extended peroid of time in the event of an outage.

the new one at staples seems like a good unit... its got the lcd display so that a plus and cyberpower has been making a crap load of electronic stuff so i would be to worried... what i would do which is a plus is buy the extra 1 year warranty from staples... it covers u a year after the 1st year that cyberpower gives you on defects and if cyberpower does not cover u within the 1st year staples will cover you and send a cashcard to ur house to go buy something else or another one... not a bad deal....

There is an article in reefkeeping that discuss various options in the event of a power outage.http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-05/gh/index.php

He reccomends this air pump,http://www.aquariumguys.com/silentairpump.html

I havn't tried it yet, but I want too. Anybody ever use them?

That looks like a decent air pump but if you are looking in that direction i would look into the one posted on here earlier from fosters and smith, you dont need an air stone for that one and it can run for 10-20hours if needed, also has a double ended prong set up for 2 airlines, a bit more $$ though....

Yeah black out was in a couple towns here in Westchester County, last about an hour or so....was very random and unexpected that early in the season....

Tony, that LCD cyber unit does look real cool and prob be the best best considering i could just run my pump and power head off of it and be ok for awhile, and the warranty is prob a must with one of them!!! .....

Randy(prattsreef) wrote a great article on how he dealt with the great NE\Canada power outage.

I been taught lead acid batteries will only give out large amount of fume while fast or deep charging, I never measured the fume level or smell fume from the two large marine batteries hooked up to my 600W inverter\charger. Some of the UPS I have taken apart used lead acid GEL batteries, they don't seen being concerned about the "fume" issue and is UL listed.

The cheaper inverter with a battery method will only work if you or someone is home to set this up during a power outage, UPS is automatic since the pump\powerhead is plugged thru it.

It's not in the article, but there was also talk of this pump on Talkingreef.com, and I beleive that it will also last in the ten to twenty range. The thing that I noticed about the Silent Air- Air Pump, as opposed to the one from fosters and smith, is that this one only turns on when there is a power outage. I looked at the fine print at fosters and smith, and it appears that their air pump always runs, but will switch over to battery back up when the power goes out. I don't want, nor do most of us need, an air pump constantly bubbling away in the display tank. Is their product description just insufficient, am I reading it wrong, or am I correct in my understanding of the product?

I still have no power. I'm at work and I'm freaking out. There goes 30 + SPS and 50 zoas colors, not to mention all the other expensive stuff. I have not had power since 9:30pm last night. I have a power inverter running out of my car most of the night and I left one power head running from on a UPS and my brother just called to tell me that the power stopped working. I'm freaking out.
