How are they setting these tanks up and putting fish in it right away?

Exotic import reefs distributor was on the show. Haha, that's where almost every pet store on he east cost gets there fish from.

They did not know anything about the fish.

Besides the horrible jokes, acting, information, ect.... I don't know, Im sure my girl and I will watch the whole season out. I like it. Or let's say... I like the hobby, and enjoy seeing the fish on tv lol.

Hey the customers wanna see fish immediatly just dump those fish in there who cares if they die. Didnt they say at the beginning of the show that you need to take it slow and be patient? Guess they dont practice what they preach.

That water is either real ocean water or water that they have made. its pre cycled better water then what we use.

Also these are fish only tanks.
Last nights episode was about a owner who kept not qt'ing fish and all the fish got sick.

The show is good i didnt see them do anything i havent seen a fish store owner do or a whole saler

They're in Vegas, where are they getting "real ocean water"? They're around 230 miles from the coast (over 8hrs round trip by car) and it's a fish only system. From a business standpoint does it make any sense to truck in water? Plus, who designs a QT system with no means of separation? I guess if one fish needs copper, they all need copper...

Just because you see a fish store owner or a wholesaler do these things it some how makes them valid?

LFSmarine guy check out this webpage, they have a hub based in Las Vegas.
http://www.catalinawater.com/

I am assuming they use this water, I do and trust it very much. I actually keep all my clowns in this water and have had amazing success.

When you service as many tanks as they do i guess it does make sense to get real ocean water. So much sense that catalina is in vegas.

Wait a minute your telling me your QT system you use is all seperate tanks with seperate filters?

That system is not typical, the one we saw last night is for someone who does fish only and its trying to QT their in one stable system.

I have seen vendors add copper to its fish only system or meds to its system as a whole.

... a QT system
+1...Not sure if they're really morons, or just 'making' good reality TV...everything was scripted so who knows!
Waste of an hour to see 5 minutes of 'interesting' things!

FWIW...who needs a $30000 QT system in the middle of their 'multi million $ home', unless they plan to keep killing the livestock in the DT, and need to constantly have 10-20 fish in reserve?

Rare, if I didn't do this for a living I wouldn't even bring up these points. It isn't cost effective to use "real ocean water" in service tanks when you deal with huge aquariums. You're talking about 10's of thousands of dollars to fill not to mention over the course of a year in water changes and that's at cost. Even if there is a hub there it doesn't make sense. At that level you are ordering pallets with single large bags/containers of salt in bulk at a fraction of the cost.

How is a single large QT system supposed to help when the customer has already proven that they aren't going to listen? With that system they would have to get whatever fish for it and wait until all are ready to go in before getting new ones or have to start the QT cycle over for all the fish. There are no hiding places which would only serve to keep the fish stressed even more than they already are. One of the hardest parts of this business is being able to explain to clients that they aren't always right. When you deal with livestock, we're the professional and while your ideas may be good, they aren't all feasible. The good companies do what they can within the parameters set by the customer and explain why the other stuff isn't going to work. A healthy prospering tank usually is a happy customer so when you follow the customers instructions down a terrible path where they will only have problems, than you aren't doing your job and you're going to eventually lose the customer. It's a fine line.

Also, even if they were using established water and rock in that system, who stocks it to capacity on day one?

30k for that is blatant gouging. Just running through what I could see (maybe there is gold buillon in the sump?) it's nowhere near that. The garden hose attached to the "leaky" pipe outside "Turn off the main!" was pretty weak too.

Alight alright. I think everyone was expecting exactly what they say. You have to remember, the show is not a "history" or "scientific" or "experimental" or "informative" or anything in that nature. If you want to watch a show on salt water with real facts or fictional information, watch a documentary film or a earth film or something in that nature. The show is a reality based show with little informative facts and more comedy based to entertain viewers. No one is going ot say "hey I want to get a salt water tank, maybe ill watch that new show tanked and learn about the hobby and get a tank started" come on... that's like me saying "hmm I think for fun I want to get a old classic car to mess around with on weekends, maybe I'll watch Barrett Jackson to get ideas on how much I need to save up and what car I want". The show is for family entertainment, and you know what, it works. That's what all these shows are like. Real life based jobs being filmed. Pawn stores, pickers, restorers, cake makers, dessert makers, chefs, professional sand castle builders, car restore companies, home make overs, hell even the big dealership down the road from me, Franklin Sussex auto mall, bilbo913 on MR works there as parts guy, the dealership right now is filming a new tv show called "car boss" showing the life of a major car sale men and the drama of it. it's all for entertainment purposes. And all these shows are HUGE hits. Personally, I love all of them. It's very interesting, has it's funny parts, and sometimes educational. Like it or not, I guarantee the show is going to be a hit. And FYI, they are still today filming new episodes for next season and anyone can be on it if you want a crazy tank built.

If you don't like it, well there is hundreds of other channels to watch. Personally, I'll be watching tanked that time of week because I like the job style reality shows...

Alot of fish stores set up tanks and fill them the same day or the next. Its not the right way but for FO tanks its completely doable with minimal fish loss if any with the right fish picked and tank set up. There are more than enough people around that expect a fully stocked fish tank ready to go for a party over the weekend to make it more common than you think. Anything is possible for the right amount of money.
