I just bought a long horn cow fish, it's been in the tank for two days it's eating, but I did a research and found that this fish might be harmful to tank mates if they release toxic liquid from his body,,can anybody give me any advise,, I have about 8 non-agressive fish in the tank

So I googled this fish to learn some more about it, and it seems that it does not usually secrete this toxin unless it is severely stressed out.

That said, there were two facts of note I wanted to share with you -

1. This fish can be very stressed out by cleaner shrimp, which could irritate it so much that the fish can become sick and die.

2. The toxin this fish secretes is comparable to the toxin that sea cucumbers secrete - and I have seen first-hand the demise of a sea cucumber causing the death of every fish in a HUGE and wonderful tank, save the sand-burying wrasses and (remarkably?) two clown fish.

It seems like if you can provide a stress-free comfortable environment for it and feed it a few times a day, it should be quite happy. Just keep an eye on it :)

btw - the articles also said that as they get older, they need to eat foods that will help to wear their teeth down....

Man, it was horrible. I don't know how similar the toxin of the cowfish is to the cucumber, but the cuke died some time over the weekend, and the tank was tank of death Monday morning :(

We were mighty surprised anybody survived.

The corals were not really impacted at all. Clearly it attacks a system/systems that corals lack... Truly, truly sad. It had to have happened overnight.

One thing to consider - the cowfish is small, the cucumber was large. But still... It was in a really large tank...
