I was at Absolutely Fish yesterday and they had Captive bred Yellow tangs and Captive bred Lookdowns for sale. This is the first time I have ever heard of this, anyone else?

WES, I understand the difference, They were both written as Captive bred, I asked the owner and he said yes, They are indeed CAPTIVE bred. Not tank raised.

Larval reared I believe, i've seen Hippo tangs raised this way before. Captive bred, I find near impossible to believe as if it were true, the achievement would be so monumental it would be lauded on every blog, in every magazine, on every hobbyist site etc. And this has just not been the case. Look at the fuss over captive bred mandarins- a fish which has in fact ben bred in captivity before.

Without some corroborating evidence that this has in fact been done, I'm not buying it. And I really hope it is true.

Yes this would be huge news...but "tank raised" tangs have been in the hobby for a while. I think maybe the store owner is confused.

I do have a supplier that did get a batch of "tank raised" lookdowns (as per his claims). I didn't end up getting any while they were available but from our quick conversation it sounded more like it was an accidental thing than something they could control. It also happened to coincide with the yearly run of juvenile tropicals up the east coast (where they are located) so there were too many other possibilities for me to have 100% faith in it.

Never heard of yellow tangs being raised anywhere though. Is he sure they weren't farmed like the Maculosus angels and such?

The tank would have to be so huge for them to be bred in and the filter on the tank would be ridiculously large and most likely not allow the fertilized eggs, which float in the current to survive.. Most tangs mass spawn also..
I vote nay,,lol..

I doubt the owner is confused, He does own Absoluetly Fish and it's not your run of the mill LFS. From the info I got from him, they are being bred in Hawaii in some kind of indoor facility. TGhe mandrins were being bred for quite some time before it was released to the public. So if this is true it might not be well known for some reason. I hope it is true though.
And Tank Raised I'm very familiar with WES, I have been in the hobby for over 16 years.

I know him as well. He is either confused or lying to you. just do an Internet search on captive bred tangs, nothing comes up. That must mean Absolutely Fish is the first store to ever sell captive bred tangs. The owner of Absolutely Fish loves publicity so I'm sure there would be all kinds of hoopla like said earlier.

Someone in the hobby for 16 years should know by now that you can't always believe what the guy in the fish store tells you.

Yes WES I know this and as you can read from my post I never said thos was 100% and that it is what HE SAID NOT ME. I understand full well. I'm sharing my experience from there the other day. Never did I say it has to be because he said so, I said this is what he said. I didn't say it or come out and try to defend him. I don't know why you keep thinking I'm defending him or whatever else you are thinking. I'm just relaying info I heard, never once did I say it was true info he gave me.:irked:

I'm not arguing with you, im telling you to stop saying that I believe him, and that I'm just relaying what he said. Once you understand that then you will get it.

You got offended when I said "He must be confused". I was giving him the benefit of the doubt and hoping he's not just straight up lying to customers.

So yes you seem to be sticking up for him and arguing with me about whether or not these fish are captive bred.

The general consensus both here and on your RC thread is that unfortunately captive bred yellow tangs do not yet exist. So instead of arguing with me maybe try to get some more info and report back? I'd check it out myself if I was still living up there.
