i can't believe i cause ick in my tank!:arg: I broke my (1) main rule for...i did not QT the new fish. It was due to my laziness and me wanting a new fish. My main tank was 'ick free" for 2 years. Now i have to remove all my fish and go fallow for 6 weeks and copper all my fish :( . just ranting on myself... sorry everyone. :irked::irked: The worst part was the new fish(s) died from ick and now my flaming angel is missing, probally died in the rock work. hope my other fish will make it.

Where I got the fish s not an issue, they looked fine. It when they were stressed the ick hit them. I normally put them in QT with copper to make sure they are ick free. The one. Time I didn't do it. Now I am going to treat all my fish, and tank.

hey

I've gotten ick in my main display before and never had to take my fish out. What I usually do is soak the food in garlic it usually works I really havent had ick for a while now also a cleaner shrimp helps too. Good Luck.

Evidently some people here have been able to have their fish fight off ick. But I think you are in the minority. Most people lose all or most of the fish unless they do something to really treat them (ie. copper or whatever). I am sure there are people who have had strep and used garlic and vitamins instead of getting a penicillin shot. But for most people it just wouldn't do the trick. There is another issue here in that if your fish do fight it off you still have it in the tank and trying to introduce new fish will probably result in failure. That is why people remove fish so it can remain fishless for a long enough period to kill of ick since they only can live if they have a fish host somewhere in their life cycle.

i dont know.in my 120 i had a serious case of ich.i removed fish treated them with copper.checked copper levels and did water changes to keep up with parameters of QT and the 2 fish that had it died.and they were healthy before they had the ick.in my new 50 gal which has been running for a year now i had fish with another serious ick problem and i treated them in the main display with heavy doses of garlic and i added a cleaner shrimp and within a week i was ick free to never return again and had no loses to my fish.that was 9 months ago.

Sometimes it's hard to remove fish, especially tangs from a reef tank though. I'm one of them. Instead, I did a 50% water change right after the ick dropped off the fish body (when the first cycle ended.) Removed 50% of the sand. And also turned on the ozone.

So everytime one gets a new fish, should they be quarantined in copper? Maybe hyposalinity? What if vendor has copper in their holding system, still need to quarantine?

You don't know if they keep the right dosage and amount of time for the copper to kill of the ick.

this a highly debated question. Everyone has their own opinions on what works for them. I'll speak for myself: i like to use chelate copper to treat all my new fish, and QT them for 14day min. before i introduce them into my main tank. It worked for me for quite a few years. It's the one time that i didn't do it, is what got me in trouble.
