so russ i guess i would need at least a minimum of 20 gall due to there being 4 fish all about 2 inches a piece what is the usual size for an acceptable qt tank

There is no typical size for a QT. It all depends upon the amount and size of the fish you're QT'ing. You can get away with a Rubbermaid tub. It doesn't have to be a glass tank. It's not going to be their permanent home and certainly doesn't have to be 'pretty'.
