Yea, but image the fun of an early addition to your tank with the security of it being quarentined.

I HATE QT's! I currently have one set up with my puffer in it and it makes me mad, its only 10 gallons and I feel bad for the little guy (I know its better than ich and death) but I hate waiting 6 weeks when I get a new tank to add him to my tank. Im so inpatient (i need help).

Yeah but again would you really trust this, what if you brought the fish home and it got ich a week later. You would blame the fish store and they would say it was your own tank. Then you would need to QT it again anyways.

Yea, but if they upcharge them and advertise as "6 week QT fish" If they added 20% to them, Id buy them.

They will have to up charge maybe 500% to cover all the holding cost and dead fish, and your LFS marks that up another 200% (the cheaper stores, like FT), you won't be buying many fish at these prices. The fish is still subject to infections and other contaminations in the LFS, then poor husbandry in most people's tank still kills the fish anyway.

All these points are completely true, but If you new your tank has been carefully designed and put together using only fish from your QT, once in awhile you could splurdge and get a nice new QT proof fish, for dbl the price. I guarentee alot of reef custemors would buy it. If it was from a trustworthy seller, plus they know there own safe reef keeping methods they have kept

There will always be ppl who dont take care of their responsibilities and blame it on someone else and expect for them to pay for it, but the dealer must ensure their practice and than its on you

House of Fish does.

Very true Ken. Thanks for pointing that out. However, we do QT our fish for two weeks, not six. This will at least allow enough time for most diseased fish to display signs of illness.

Even though we QT our new arrivals for two weeks, there is still stress induced from the netting, bagging, transportation, and your acclimation to your home system. This stresses the fish in and of itself. So a responsible QT on the buyers end is still the prudent thing to do.

Master you helped me out in the past with aquarium products and advice I didnt know you did fish too.

Do you have a site that members could see what fish you and house have in stock or is it by order only?

We post only some of the fish that we stock. Mostly the unique, hard to find fish. One other thing, fish don't listen when we talk to them. We continually ask them to stay motionless and let us take their pic. They rarely listen :sad2: Our picture taking abilities are poor at best. Therefore we mostly post pix of our corals and clams. But we have our fish holding system in Westchester County and one in Orange County, always ready for your viewing.

We will pickup fish to order in addition to the fish we buy on impulse. You'll notice a few ORA black percs, and misbars, lots of various wrasses in threads we post.

Do you take orders and QT as well? I recognize your risk in that scenario so I would assume a cost increase. Regardless post a list Id rather pay $50 more for a fish thats eating, adapting to captivity and w/o parasites, PLEASE!

We do post with some pix. Look in the 'Forums' then 'Vendors' then 'House of Fish'. You'll find some pix. Not many, but we've been getting a lot of fish from ORA if that helps at all.

As far as fish by request (orders). We'll still hold them for our two week QT.

We practice what we preach. Responsible reefing.

I would be great if we knew that distributors Qt fish for six weeks, however I don't think that happens, nor will it ever happen. Like Cali reef said in the previous post, there would be a major mark up and we won't be buying many fish at those prices and to top it off the fish is still subject to infections and other contaminations.

We should all practice having a QT tank, I know it sucks and I use to never practice it, but it is important and for the best. I learned this the hard way and lost nearly a thousand dollars of fish trusting others who do not practice what they preach.

I have purchased and been to HOF(Jim) and I believe they practice what they preach. There tanks look like you can drink from them (spotless) and belong in someone's living room as display tanks. The only bad thing I have to say is, I wish there holding tanks were larger and could house larger fish, as I am into large fish.

Anyway, any fish I get now whether it comes from a LFS, vendor, someone's personal tank, etc goes into a QT tank for 1 month and maybe more until I am confident that it will not hurt any of my displays. I am into large angels and I have to much to loose and will never ever take that chance again or trust no one.

JL, keep doing what your doing. It is for the best, you are doing the right thing...

A while ago I read somewhere that a place in South Jersey QT's their fish.Don't know how true and for how long they QT.I personally wouldn't drive all that way coming from SI so I know u wouldn't from Bayside. As far as QT goes we need to switch tanks.I have two little fish(mystery wrasse&helfrichi firefish) in my 30 hex qt since Dec 26th and want nothing more than for them to be in my main tank real soon but I need to wait.I purchased a fish from some Lfs in Brooklyn on 11th avenue that I thought was ok and a week and a half later it showed signs of ich.If you can get a bigger Qt tank.Lol.At least you QT which is a + for you and your fishies.Do you know how many people just throw their new arrivals in their tank and cross their fingers.Russian roulette if you ask me.

Like master said, there are still factors, even if you buy a fish from someone who has had it disease free for years, theres always the risk.
