Yea im currently lowering my SG to 1.012 in my fowlr over a cpl days and raising the temp to get all the parasites from the display tank, w/o using chemicals. I will do this for a cpl weeks, and keep my puffer in the QT and I will keep it up and running so I can ensure a parasite free tank.

Im gonna see if I could get a larger QT that can fit in the stand of my 125

i have been reading up on the hyposalinity treatments lately. And most things i read suggest using 1.009, just an fyi.

You think 1.009 would be safe for the whole tank? Right now Im about 1.015 and changing 5 gallons a day saltwater for rodi water. Dropping slowly.

I really dont wanna kill all the fish with the salinity being so low, and for how long would you reccomend me keeping it this low? the typical 4-6 ich treatment

The Hypo will not start to work until you are down to the proper level

Regarding the original intent of this thread..IMO businesses keeping fish in QT for an extended period of time eats too far into profits to be reasonable for them to do so. The 2 week QT that HoF does (and possibly others) can be helpful for identifying internal parasite issues, and other more noticable diseases. The fact that the fish are once again being fed and cared for in a cleaner environment is obviously beneficial, though I have seen far too many LFS's who feed far too lightly for fish that have already been through so much stress already due to importing procedures. I have been know to whip out my soapbox when sighting a starving Mandarin in a BB rock free tank in a LFS...

But when it comes to ich...the biggest issue we seem to face in purchasing new fish...the stressors of catching, bagging and transporting those fish to your tank wipes out any benefits (..again regarding ich) of prior QT'ing, short of the fish having had a chance to build up some immunity by being in a more heathy state.

The risk of ich developing during that move warrants QT'ing in your home before introduction to your display tank.
I see no sensible way around it.

There are distributors who quarantine. 4-6 weeks is beyond what any that I know of would do but they do hold them for a bit until they see them healthy and active and hopefully eating. They deal with major accounts like public aquariums and casinos and resorts so they have to keep a higher standard for themselves or be lost in the pack. We order from them regularly and prices vary depending on the item. Some are more expensive and others are cheaper but their mortality is usually much lower than anywhere else I get from.

QT is the best way to ensure the health of your fish and system. Why would you want to take somebodies word that they QT the fish for x amount of weeks? They are the business of selling live stock, the longer they hold it, the most likely hood they will suffer higher deaths. Your just going to have to bite the bullet and QT. It sucks I know, but its better than the sinking feeling when your main tank gets infected and fish start dying.
