My puffer is a funny little guy, I'm super happy that no one wanted him/her when I got tempted to sell him/her.
He/she puffs up every now, and again for no apparent reason. Sometimes I think he/she is practicing his/her ability to puff just incase.
Any way here are some pics of the puffing ritual from puffed to back to normal.

Awesome pics and he's a cutie. But I don't think Puffers puffing up is a good thing. From everything I've always read it can even be dangerous for them because sometimes they have a hard time deflating again. And generally only tend to puff up if startled and stressed out.

Yes Dmitry, I've read the same thing. But like I said, he/she has done this a few times without provacations. The only thing that could have startled him/her is it's own reflection on the back glass since it is painted black. His/her's tank mates are; 4"Bluethroat trigger, 3"Yellow tang, 2.5"Purple tang, 2"Coral Beauty dwarf angel, & 1.5"Flame dwarf angel.
Not only that, I've had three previous Dogface puffer that did the same, and never died from the experience.
1 died from a infestation of ich earlier this year. 1 died when a heater went bad, and cooked my fish while I was at work. And the other I traded.

Guys/gals, he/she is adorable. He/she will follow me around the room. When I sit next to the tank on occasions he/she will sit on the sand right next to me, and has spat water at me on occasions.:wink1: Easily the only true fish/pet in the salt water hobby. Fresh water I would say the Oscars......

Definately true! Something or someone in the tank might be stressing him/her out. I myself have two puffers in my 180 (one white and one black dog face) and in the year that I had them have never seen them blow up. In cases where he can't deflate him/herself you can hold them upside down (in the water ofcourse) and gently rub his/her belly to help them push the air out (tips from Bob Ferner).

Thanks for the tip on how to help it deflate! Have never had a puffer need the help, but good to know in any case.

AGAIN, I have not seen it being picked at, or bothered by any of his/her tank mates. If I did see him/her being bothered would I not do anything to help him/her? Of course I would. There is absolutely no evidance of it being bothered either, no torn fins or anything. Easily the healthiest looking fish in the tank. He/she swims about happily in his/her new home, they now have an extra 2'.

They are beautiful fish. They are my wife's favorite fish (tried to convert the 180 to a reef and didn't do it cause of the ridding of the puffers-u get attached to them, lol).....

You could set up another tank for a reef.:wink1: That's what I did.

By the way, I've read, and been told many times that you cannot keep two puffers because they will fight to the death!

It was fate that kept you two together....it was meant to be!
I had a masked puffer (tank to himself) for 5 years before I had to break down his tank and give him away.....
I would find him puffed up a few times a year for no apparent reason as well. The back Glass was not painted and no movement in the room.
Never caused a problem. Best "doggy" type" fish ever...mine spit water at me as well-every time I came in the room to feed him!
Great shots!

Hey Eric, I think mine spits water at me to get my attention. He just sits there on the sand. It really looks like he/she is looking at me, and if I don't look at it then it will spit water at me. I mean I'm sitting next to the tank, that water has to be spat out the side of the tank in order to get me.lol
They are awesome, family and friends that know nothing about sw fish fall inlove with the my dogface puffer. Think I better stop, cause I can go on for ever on these guys.....

Does your doggy sit in the rocks a lot? I've noticed that when mine isn't eating it either wedges itself in the rocks or a little cheeto bed I made for my cowfish.

Awi the only time my puffer puffs up is when my fiance approaches the tank with a towel on her head after whe gets out of the shower. They dont like that for some reason! :tub: It has only happened twice, both times the towel was on the head. I dont know why, I have just learned to accept this as my puffers reality.

I'm in the process of setting up my little reef (75G cube). Will post pics as soon as I get it going...About my 2 puffers not getting a long, the only agression a seen from both of them is at feeding time. Blacky tends to chase the white one away, lol.....They've been together for almost a year already.
