So my purple tang has ich, gonna qt today. Basically i observed it in the tank for the past week, the ich comes, then goes away and comes back. Decided to qt the fish and use cupramine for a couple of weeks. Everybody agrees that's the way to go?
Thanks

i have never done copper, only hypo, thats for the 12 tangs i have.. best imo as copper is not great for tangs

Imo this no cure for ick only treatment ime the way to combat ick is with trying to keep the infected as stress free as possible i beleive many if not all fish carry the parasite the fish that get seriously infected are the ones with low immunity i think quarantine will add stress to an already weak specimen entice feeding with selcon and or garlic and hope your fish will overcome the parasite it is already in your system only a strong healthy fish will be able to survive an outbreak

Ive read that hypo is the best way to go due to the fact that its the least stressful for the fish. Copper kills parasites because it is a harsh treament. And as stated earlier, certain fish (such as tangs) dont respond well to copper treament. Because its basically adding poison to the tank but only enough to kill the parasite. Sometimes this is a fine line and may depend on how weakened the fish is already. As for the topic of ridding a fish of ick, it is a parasite and it is possible to rid a fish completely of it. My vote is for hypo treament.

Hypo only works if it's truly Ich, otherwise it doesn't work. So, you need to be sure that your fish have Ich, and not something that shows similar symptoms. If you do go Hypo you need to make sure you're SG is at the correct level, and stay there for the full treatment period. So, you need to make sure you have a refractometer and it should be calibrated.

If you can treat with Copper it's probably the best way to go, though you need to treat at the correct level and be sure not to over treat, so get a good test kit, as too much copper will kill the fish and not enough doesn't do anything. Because of this I use Copper Power, as I can treat at much higher levels without worrying about killing the fish.

You can get rid of Ich from your tank, as it's a parasite and it goes through stages, one of which is falling off of the fish. So it doesn't lay dormant in the fish.

Paolissimo you are stating if you system if fish only ! mixed reef !! if it is fish only raise temp to 84 and use HYPO but need to add more water movement to increase oxygen if you have corals in it you will need to keep all your fish in quarantine for 8 weeks !! not to cure the fish but to give enough time to your main tank to have no fish in it otherwise ich will reproduce again ! good luck

I think before you do all of that you should just simply try soaking their food in garlic and feeding them it. If that method fails then you can kick it up a notch with hypo salinity. I have never used copper but I have heard that it works

Feeding garlic or ginger doesn't kill the Ich, so you can put it in the food or the tank and it's not going to matter. Raising the Temp may work for fresh water fish but it doesn't do anything to kill the Ich in salt water tanks.

If you plan on doing Hypo you need to watch the Ph, as when you get to lower SG the Ph can drop well under 8, so you need to test it and have buffer to keep the level up.

I do the Tank Transfer Method with Prazi and my tank is Ich free. I'm currently doing the TTM with buckets on a wrasse. I usually do it with 20 gallon containers. The amount of water I use is dependent on how many fish I'm quarantining. 2-3 fish, I use only ten gallons in the 20 gallon container. Right now, I'm only using 3 gallons of salt water in a bucket. Here is the link if you like to read more about it. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1996525

Ok since my last post, I am happy to report that my purple tang seems to be ich free. I don't want to jinx it, but I didn't see any white spot or signs of disease on the fish today. I did not medicate the fish, I left it in the tank. The only thing I did since my last post is feed the fish exclusively new era aegis flakes and brown marine algae with natural garlic extract and a water change. My purple tang is/was always healthy, so it's probably a coincidence that since I only fed that type of food the disease seems to be gone. Most likely he fought the ich off but I'll feed this diet for a little longer and see what happens. Hopefully the ich wont comeback. Also i didn't receive any notification that there were replies to this topic that's why I haven't updated. The tank is a 75gal mixed reef, with about 90 gal of total water volume. I have 9 fish, and none of the other fish have signs of ick.

....or the fish still has Ich, or will be re-infected, and you just don't see the last part of the Ich cycle, which is the white spots on the fish.
I had another reefer look at the fish, and visually it did look like ich. Marrone you might be right (but I hope you wrong :), I looked at it this morning without the lights before I left for work, and the skin was clear, no white spots. Hopefully the fish was able to fight it off.

Either we misdiagnose ich a LOT or fish can fight it off more than some would say...i think this disease can be deadly but at the same time many people's tanks have it and have no issues...i wish someone would explain this phenomenon..
