I have a chance to pick up a 2X175 36" fitting for my 65 till I can swing the LED's for a good price but I am a little concerned about something. I have read several threads over on RC about the ballasts for these units catching fire. Seems it is more the older, single plug style ballasts but wanted to get some feedback from you guys on the subject. You can see some posts below.

Is there a way to tell if they are electronic ballasts from the picture I have attached?

Any of your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

To quote you from another thread...."Oh it's on buddy!"

I was hoping I would here only warm fuzzy comments about it.

My only other option is a TEK 6 bulb like you said with the ReefBrite strip...

Was hoping to save a few bucks for sand/rock Lol. At this rate it will be next March before I'm setup Lol.

Get the light. Make sure you have good fire insurance and lots of smoke detectors throughout the residence.

Those are the old ballasts. I have ran many many odyssea fixtures before. 3 of them metal halide. The ballast you have their is an older style. I got my last one about Just shy of a year ago on aquataders.com it was the 36 inch single metal halide 250w with 4 t5 bulbs. The ballasts were the black style with neon red switches. the old ballasts were black with black switches. The really old ballasts are the silver ballasts kinda like yours. The newest ones and very nice. Every unit is now external ballasts on ALL fixtures. You might be safer messaging aqua traders.com and see if the new ballasts plug in the same with their old fixtures. Then again, I have NEVER had a problem with odyssea. Most fires were caused my owners fault. Not enough oxygen reaching the ballasts, water splashing all ov the ballasts, not running a loop effect, ect...

I would buy a good fixture not this cheap pos. Sorry but the track record of this company is poor and I don't trust the quality of the equipment. Again if you going to be getting this unit make sure you have good fire insurance and lots of smoke detectors throughout the residence.

My buddy just got last week their slim line fixture. T5. Even the t5 is external ballast now. But, you are correct, mint as well play it safe if you want to. I actually sold that metal halide I had and picked up a tek light 4 bulb t5 and more then happy with it. Saltwater critters has them for about 200 bucks right now! How can you go wrong?!

At that rate I could just buy a new fixture Lol....

Pretty much lol. Just go with the t5 we talked about. Your going to LOVE. And if you get that reef brite you will be shocked. I can send you pics later when I'm home from college showing you the color difference with metal halide to t5 then to t5 with reef brite...
