I always loved the idea of the wiper blade cleaning the neck of the collection cup but i could never justify spending over $1000 on a squeegee blade on a motor.
Well thanks to Avast Marine we all could enjoy a wiper blade for our skimmers at a more affordable price.
there website is: http://www.avastmarine.com/ssc/

here is mine mounted on my SWC 250

I wouldn't even be able to justify spending $135 on something like this.

Don't you still need to clean the wiper blade after a while?

depending on your skimmer you would need to clean it between 2-4 weeks. in my case i was cleaning my skimmer 3x a week, now i do it once every 2 weeks.

I think the concept of a self cleaning head is good. However, it is definitely not worth $135. The Swabbie costs a little more than $150 after shipping IIRC. I made one myself for under $40. Google "DIY self cleaning head" and you should get a bunch of information on how to make one yourself.

Of course DIY will always be cheaper but if you compare the cost of other "store bought" self cleaning heads, the swabbie is super cheap.

Yes and there is no need to ever buy a "store bought" one because these are really easy to make.

The same can be said about anything...

Most DIY jobs simply spray water in the neck. This design is motorized with a squeegee.

If you can build a motorized self cleaning head that squeegees the neck for $40 then maybe you have a point.

Do you make your own furniture? Beer? Soap? Candles? Clothes?

If you know what you're doing, all of the above are easy to make, and personally, I do make some of them myself, but for the most part, it's easier to buy the stuff at a store and pay a premium for it. It comes down to time and ability vs cost.

While I don't doubt you are able to DIY vortechs, reef controllers, and refractometers, most of us cannot. One thing we can make though, is this SCH.

a motorized head that squeegees the neck is not a simple DIY job.

Spraying it down with water is a cheaper solution but its not the same thing...

That motor cost him $35. When you add up the cost of all the other materials you need to buy plus the time it takes to tinker and build, I would much rather spend $135 on the swabbie.

It's not $135. It's a little over $150 with shipping. That is at least $100 more than what it costs to make one yourself.

I don't understand why you feel that it is wrong to DIY something like this. Most people even try to DIY something that would save them a couple of bucks for example, frag racks. The only reasons why I could see someone getting upset over this is if they bought one themselves or if they have stock in the company making these.

For everyone else, I think that DIY thread should be helpful.

Nobody is saying that it is wrong to try and DIY a self cleaning head. In fact, if you are able to pull it off I think most of us would be seriously impressed (at least I would). What people seem to be saying is that this is a project that is probably well beyond the abilities/available time of most of us.

That being said, the only person I see getting upset here is you...

I never said it's wrong to DIY. You decided to interrupt a discussion about a new product with a discussion about your DIY project.

I am just pointing out that $135 is a very good price considering other manufacturers have charged MUCH more.

Just because you can build one for less does NOT mean this product isn't worth the MSRP. And no I do not own one, nor do I own stock in the company.

I can make a great pizza from scratch for cheap but 99.9% of the time I call up the pizzeria and have one delivered.
