I have had Mag drive in sump pumps since I have gotten into the hobby. I ran a mag 12 as my return from my sump. This is just to let you know what happened to me with the pump and the compay.
After about 2 to 3 years running a mainly SPS reef tank, seeing frags from 1/2 inch grow into fist size colonies things just started to go bad and fast. I had RTN and STN and SPS just turning into pretty white stone. I checked my water thinking there was something wrong with it. Everything was usual no big changes. I was lost and no one seemed to know what to think. So after restarting my SPS tank with all new frags, colonies, live rock and even sand. I didnt see anything good happening no kind of color or polyp extention. I had some encrusting at the base but nothing like I got 3 years ago.
So after about 6 months of looking at the tank and thinking about it I pulled the plug on the system and broke everything down. Well what I found was very disappointing, I pulled my Mag 12 return pump out of my sump and found rust around the screws and where you would take the inpeller out. (see picture) I never had a problem with the pump working. It was a strong pump.

Now I know why most of my SPS crapped out on me. The sad part is I dont have it in me to start all over again.
So I call Danner in NY and asked them what the story is with this and what they can do. Well I was told that 2 times a year isnt good enough to clean the pump, it should be done every 4 weeks.. (I dont know about anyone else here but my return pump was very hard to) Im out of warranty by a year or so. So she told me basiclly its my problem and I need to buy a new pump. I told her this wasnt something I could fix or replace like the impeller it was the body of the pump. They wouldnt do anything to help me but sell me a new pump.
So from my experience I just want to let everyone know about mostly the rusting problem and the companies care and help. I would be very careful with using there pumps... I will never use a Danner pump again...
Thanks for reading and beware and good luck.

I wrote about this last year and got hammered by reefers saying I don't know what I'm talking about LOL I wrote if you have a mag pump to change your metal screws to nylon. They are good pumps but have to change the screws.

I recently discovered a similar problem with my Gen-X pump used for my ETS Reef Devil skimmer. The impeller was rusted SOLID. Apparently this is a fairly common problem. Open your pump and see if the impeller is leeching rust.

Considering that impellers are so damned expensive, I would figure that they could use a better grade of plastic or even ceramics in the coating.

Yea well they can hammer me all they want I still have the pump to prove it...LOL I dont think its just the screws rusting if you look at the picture its all around the housing.

sorry to hear about your losses, but in their defense Mags have been very reliable pumps for me over the years...they did improve the impropeller shaft by making them ceramic, but the stainless screws rusting is and has been a major problem with them for many years that they haven't corrected yet. As mentioned nylon screws will stop the rusting issue...

Yea changing the screws would be a start. But if you look at the pump body the rust is coming from there also. So the screws would only be a start to fix the rust problem.
I never said it was a bad pump it was a work horse in my tank for years but we dont need rust in the tank..
I think I had a bigger problem with the person at danner brushing it off and making it sound like it was my problem and there is nothing wrong with there pumps... And the BS she told me about clearing the pump every 4 weeks in vinegar which I think is a load of crap....
But again this is only my opinion....
I may just take the screws out and see what I find and if the rust goes deeper Ill take picture and post them.

opened the pump up.

Well I figured why not Im not going to sell the mag 12 anyway so I opened it up.
Take a look at the pictures and tell me if its the screws causeing the rust...

I think they are only part of the problem.

Believe it or not it wasnt the screws that was the problem it was the pump itself. The screws looked very good compared to the pump body....

That sucks! I was multi-tasking and meant to ask where the best place was to get these nylon screws. Between the pics and danner's response to you...I don't think that I want to even try to replace them and will start looking for a replacement pump...I was warned about heat with these...which hasn't been a problem for me...but not rust... :headache:

It's definitely a workhorse though...it's running my 3 tanks plumbed together, sump and reactors...
