All mags are trouble, because of that reason, I have a 9.5 and I found out after I bought it about the rust and for heavens sake Danner is still making them like that.... It's why you pay less but get a lesser product. I should get another brand.

reading this and i am currently running a mag 7 on my 75 gallon.. planning an upgrade to a 120 or 150 and knowing this information im definitely going to go another route but what internal pump doesnt suffer from this problem thats equivalent to a mag 12? maintenance every 4 weeks is excessive.. i do have 2 mag 7s but one is for back up but it sounds like you'll need 2 in rotation to properly maintain these pumps.. could use some suggestions to a better alternative if there is one

I still use a mag pump .. And I will say it is a work horse.. But I will never buy or suggest anyone to use a mag pump.. This rust issue is ridiculous .. And if I lose power I have to beat the ever living crap out of the pump to get the impeller to start spinning again.

Im out of the hobby so I havnt done any research on which pump to go with instead of a Mag. But hopfully these guys on here will give you some good suggestions.

But your right to clean a pump every 4 to 6 weeks is nuts...

Not sure if I posted on this subject already, but is rust really that bad...? I heard gfo is rust? Please help! My mag 36 crapped out on me, def will be getting something diff. Soccer pump I hope!
If your doing SPS then Im going to say rust is a bad thing. I never did any reasearch to find out what GFO's were but your not putting that much GFO into your system and as it picks up the phosphates it gets weaker.
But my thoughts are why add extra rust to the tank with the pump if you dont have too.
Good Luck

GFO is Granular Ferric Oxide which is iron oxide which is rust.
However the fasteners on a Mag pump are not iron. They are made from some kind of alloy that could include any other metal like Zinc, Steel, or Aluminum. This would not be safe to have oxidizing in your tank.
When they oxidize they will not complete the same process to ferric oxide.
This does not imply that rusting iron is safe for a reef tank either.
