Sorry for all the questions...

I just bought an eshopps sump, The RS-200. I was all excited to get this thing going to night, and i plug it in and the cabinet sounds like a waterfall going on in there... The overflow hose attachs t the top of the sump and basically drops the water about 5 inches above the water line. So its like just pouring down into the water and it resonates throughout the whole cabinet, is it OK to just put the hose in the water? Im guessing that would be the answer...

Second questions, I have a triton 3 pump for my return, Its seems to be a bit strong - It seems it is sucking out water than the overflow can fill the sump, Is there any way to dial back the flow somehow?

Third question - any way to dampen the vibration caused by the skimmer, it creates a super loud hum in inside the stand....

Thanks in advance! And again sorry for all teh questions! I hope someday I can offer some help to others!

You don't want to have your overflow line submerged you can extend the overflow with pvc to where its lees of a drop, then again I had an Aqueon sump that had it submerged so try it.

You can and should have a ball valve on your return line. You can partially close the valve to slow the flow of the pump and let your overflow keep up with it.

With the skimmer you can put a layer of styrofoam under it to lessen the vibration noise

You may just have to deal with some noise but there are multiple things you can try to lessen it all.

Also don't ever apologize for asking questions- better to ask than to have a situation come back to bite you in the butt later on because you were afraid to "bother" people

Thank you! Ill try your suggestions.

Any reason why you dont want the overflow pipe to be submerged? Just curious...

Ill be honest - I am ready to just pay someone to come in and hook all this stuff up, I cant tell you how much productivity has been lost with my jopb these past few days!!! UGGGHHH...

Russ(masterswimmer) has said multiple times you don't want restrict the flow like that but my Aqueon sump had the overflow go into an acrylic tube then the water overflowed over the 2 socks so give it a shot if you want.

LOL NOOOOOO...trials and tribulations are worth going through. It's how you learn to not freak out when something goes a bit haywire if it does. You'll know exactly how your entire system is plumbed and setup so when you have to fix something you won't be confused. Just be patient you'll get it all squared away, just keep asking questions. You'll be good to go.

I am confused by this question.
Are you saying your sump drains faster than the overflow can fill it up?
If this is the case then you will cause a flood.
What kind and size overflow do you have?

A Triton3 is not rated pretty high you may need to step down or install something to slow the output. A ball valve or something else.

Honestly, it sounds like your system just doesn't have enough water in it. The Triton 3 is only rated at 850 gph @ 0'. With 4-5 feet of back pressure you are probably in the 500-550 gph range. If you have a 1" overflow it can handle 600 gph, certainly more flow than the pump will generate.

Do you see the water level in your display tank rising when the pump empties the sump? Or do you just see the sump becoming empty? My thoughts are that you'll need to run the pump and add water to the sump until the system falls into balance.

I have a similar sump as well... i just stack a bunch of the blue&white filter pads in there. It works very well especially since those sumps do not allow for a filter sock!

Russ

I think he's just complaining about the noise... they are built to aerate the overflow line coming into the sump by having it drop a few inches and splash. I would say it's about 6 inches from the top of the sump to max water level line on the sump. This area has a grate which can be used for carbon or other filters. See a similar sump below. The water goes down the overflow pipes to fill that area then it comes out of the top (above the black grate) which causes the noise. It does come with a cover but I had to remove mine for my skimmer. Maybe it's really a freshwater sump (???) because the one I bought had that area filled with bio-balls which I removed.

Russ, you are correct - A little low on water. Everything seems pretty balanced now.

Now the only thing that is really gettig on my nerves is the vibration from the pumps. It is driving me crazy and i cant seem to get it to town down..

Awesome. Glad that worked (very inexpensive fix :) )

Have you tried putting a mouse pad under your pump? They absorb vibration very well.

Sounds like you have the same problem I have, I just set up today my 90 reef ready deep blue with the Eshopps sump rs-200 and the Triton 3 pump,
1) I added an extension of the 1 1/2" pvc about an 8" pipe underneath
inside the rectangle filter sock, it does make it hard put it together after but you can , also added some blue filter pad inside the sock
as for the Triton 3 you need to add a ball valve in line so you can slightly adjust it, also the pump has a front adjustment for opening and closing the intake area close it a little. Their absolutely right about the water level put in enough so it will adjust to its proper level.

Have you noticed a gurgling sound on the intake, thats where I'm up to in quieting down things a bit.
I'm thinking maybe a needle valve on top fitted will help, will that work or just slow down the intake?
Happy Reefing!

I was at home depot looking at ball valves today, i cant figure out how I would out that inline after my pump. I am running the trition to the tank with 3/4" tubing.
