are you familiar with the sicce pumps that run the msx line? i have the msx300 for almost 2 years now. the first year everything work very well. at about a year and a half mark, the pumps occasionally make some noise and have start up problem.

make sure you test the sicce pumps for start up problems and noise. if they don't start up without blowing into the air intake or have grinding noise, you should take the pumps apart and check the impellers. many will show sign of wear on the housings, magnets, and the ceramic shafts. the sicce pumps are pretty expensive to replace...something like 110-125 a piece, that's 220+ on top of the skimmer if you have to replace them both. the impellers and ceramic shafts aren't cheap either.

i gave up on the mesh mod....the pump pulls more air and no problem with starting but the mesh only last less than 8 months before needing replacement. i went with purple pin wheel instead. it does a decent job but occasionally has start up problem and sometimes it rattles. once it gets going, no problem after that.

i haven't seen any msx300 up for sale. gl with the search.

i don't agree with this. mine rattled on startup from day one, mo matter how many times i pulled apart the pump and re-seated the shaft. mesh or needle wheel did not matter either.
once they got running though, they worked awesome.
i left mine on all the time and just adjusted down the foam when cleaning the collection cup.
my factory constructed mesh wheels lasted me over a year before i sold the skimmer (it was too big for my sump and i had zero space to work on it so i went down to the same skimmer with a 10" reaction chamber).

i would recommend this skimmer to anyone. i have to admit, i am curious about the performance of the new bubble blaster pumps though.

i'm not saying it's not good. i think it's a great skimmer especially for the money.
i also leave mine on all the time to avoid the rattle at start up also.
found a new tip to the rattle problem....theory is that it's not balanced so while it's rattling at start up, turn the pump in either direction slightly and plug your finger over the intake and remove repeatedly until the rattling stops and leave it in that position from now on. tried this last time i cleaned it, seems to do the trick....so far.

I just got a octopus 200 today, Got it for 100 brand new, it was a display model without directions, but the price is hard to beat.

that's a steal....just the sicce pump alone is already over a hundred. don't really need any direction. it comes fully assemble ready to roll. rinse everything with hot water, don't scrub just use wet sponge if it's grimy and wipe dry with a soft towel. check the water height in the sump....the recommended water height is 8-10 inches. pretty much everything else is self explanatory. oh you'll need a few days for break-in period.
good score buddy!!!
