No, it means that the other vendors aren't willing to risk major fines to make a few dollars on some corals. On the first post there is one "Special Japanese Morph" - which implies the others are regular Japanese morphs.

PPE is one specific morph - just like Watermelon Chalice or Pink Lemonade acropora. There are tons of other Protopalythoas and Echinophyllias and Acroporas that come in. I'm sure there's a few colonies of each kicking around that people didn't get from Steve Tyree or Blane Perun and didn't pay massive amounts for either.

Do you know how wholesalers/exporters work? You buy a certain number of boxes, and maybe get ONE rare coral thrown in. Not 100 micros at a time. They are clearly obtained in another fashion. Seeing as how maybe a couple other vendors with similar inventory (expensive frags of a couple of rare species) operate, it is evident that these are coming from the same person in CA who travels regularly to JP.

As far as Aussie acan vs. micro - they were probably mislabeled. I have yet to see any Micros from Aus up close.

well to be honest i really dont feel like most of this coral got smuggled...this comes from my expierince dealing with this guy and his people who buy high end coral first hand... i have a great example for you now .. three month ago i bought very nnice micro from the guy dealing a bulk acans ,,,, and after a week or so i spotted exact the same morph at chris's site for 80 bux a polyp... i bought 8 polyps for much less.... my own opinion is that every shipment get a nice coral in the contaner but before it hits us you have a hundreds of cali folks trying to cherry pick it .... there is a lot of nice LE frags out there but to me the whope thing does not make sence anymore after so many crazy coral hit the market this year.... every single aussie on e bay would make a limited edition coral back in 2005... so pay what you want and enjoy what you got

i remember chris sturting his collection from few morphs from fraggle reef miguel ufo, purple hase, sweet tooth... there was a thread on rc with a biggest beef abolut tyree and pink lemonade morph etc.... those days he did not have a webstore and people just ask him to frag just like i ask you few month ago.... he jumped really fast and does not mind to spend a few hundred for a colony.... micromussa fad started and it is still strong

just me personally, but i think a $100 per polyp is retarded, never seen a coral 1 polyp that i would pay that for. just to say i have it. whats worse is that the corals that are hot this 6 months wont be worth 1\2 what people are paying for them in 6 months. see alot sold on here, what was the in coral 6 months ago or a year ago, please dont be offended if you are one that pays these prices, but i am a broke reefer and just could phathom coming home and telling my wife i dropped a $100 and pull out a bag with 1 polyp in it.she said i will be homeless when i spend that on a fish { want a mystery wrasse } told her it's only a hundred :biggrin:

I agree with Grisha, if YOU personally like the coral and think it's worth it, then go for it.

Same concept as people paying $500+ (my sis have one :))for a little Luis Vuitton(sp?) wallet. Same concept , does that wallet hold money any better than a $30 one? or does it duplicate the bills you store in it?

It's all up to the individual. I have also witness people complain (at lfs) about a $20 clown fish. They think if its more than $3 for a fish, its too much. Everyone values things differently, its just that simple. If it's too much, shop around or don't buy it. We all come across something that we want but cannot afford.

Kenske,

<gets on soap box>

I somewhat agree with you... I do believe hype and marketing are engineered to make some vendors lots of money...
A very calculated supply and demand. I'm not thinking monopoly here, more like why insider trading is illegal.. or professional athletes gambling..etc...
it rides the thin line of legality and integrity

I can appreciate why ferraris cost so much vs a scion. I'd pay the extra $$ for quality. But corals aren't man made designs or fabricated... Overextended pricing is man made manufactured. Price gouging.

grisha, he may not necessarily be doing it intentionally, but most of those morphs originated in the same waters. irregardless of where he bought it, smuggled is smuggled.

Hello Everyone :) I really thought that I was registered here.. LOL but went to post and found out that I was'nt ... How could I have missed this site? anyway

This is a great discussion for many reasons and I really appreciate the fact that those who have dealt with me have attempted to defend me :) shows character.

In over 3 years cultivating coral I do not have even 1 negative feedback that I know of... Please check these links for those who do not know me;

Discussion :)

I try to run a responsive and friendly business, I try to treat all people fairly and am always very generous in my dealings with clients. You can read more than one testamonial of a client losing a frag months after reciept and me replaceing it free of charge just so that they have it :) I believe treating people right to be the reason for my success. Basically, I am a reefer with some serious addictions and a VERY large expensive reef tank. I work as a full time paramedic and the website and micro sales simply cover the costs of my tanks and all of the corals that I buy LOL.
As for costs of micromussa some of my colonies I have given well over $1500 for some I recieved as a very smal frag and grew this out thus others ie: Tyree, Hugo, Miguel, micheal ect had set the price when I originally bought the frag, Those colonies that I obtained for less I sell for less. I usually keep a nice chunk for myself and sell off enough to cover its cost and then electrical and salt mixes. I view myself more as a library for a very special species of coral: Micromussa Amakusensis. I take this responsibility seriously and most reefers that I have spoken to appreciate this service. I name my morphs to keep track of genetic liniage.. it is easy to call one red with green and another one blue and red when you keep just a few but I currently farm over 100 unique morphs :)
With re: to Japan, Aussie, indo morphs :) firstly, I do not even have a CITES nor do I smuggle coral LOL... However, I do have many Japanese morphs I have these because of the collectors who initially purchased the original shipment (like 2003) many of you already know this story well so I will not rehash this.. I was not a part of this but I have gone out of my way to track down these morphs to preserve them through aquaculture for both my own personal gratification and also to catalog and disperse those morphs that I am able to propagate :)... UFO / BlackJack / Angel Eyes / Purple Haze / Sweet tooth and many more are all remainants of this first grouping... My very best friend and often house visitor is a Regional Supervisor for Arkansas Fish and wildlife, he loves my tanks, often advises me and agrees I stock NOTHING inviolation of any law :). I believe that it would be insulting, a travesty even to allow these morphs to expire in NOOB tanks over time and the more collectors preserving these morphs the greater a chance for survival thus the less our reefs must be raped. Lots of very basic Indo morphs out there not too interesting, as for Aussies I agree with the earlier statements of few and far between as most are just small acan.. Pandora and Vertigo are 2 true Aussie micro.
I do really hope that this is an apeasment. I long ago learned that some people just wont like me :( (3rd grade) But I have found most of the reefers I contact do actually become quite fond of me and I hope to be welcomed here also.

Thank You,

Christopher Fry aka Reefdoctormicromussas
