What is wrong with it is that it is a very difficult coral to keep and you appear to be new to the hobby. Bad choice of gift on your wife's part. Always research your purchases before you buy. There isn't a lot of advice to be given here as this is a coral that even advanced hobbyists struggle with. Prognosis--grim :(

It's not dead yet. Can you provide some of the specs on your tank like size, lighting, skimmer, etc.? And then provide what your water parameters (pH, KH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, Spec. Grav., Calcium)? How long have you had the coral?

I think there's something in the air cause it seems like there are a lot of questions being asked that shouldn't be and MR seems to be venting!:letitallo...lol. I did too earlier. Problem is that bottom line you have to research before you buy. That being said I would def not question prattreef but let me say that yes I hear its a tough coral to keep in captivity b/c I wanted one too but passed for that reason. Not meaning that yours is gone but provide some tank specs and go from there.

what good will tank specs do?

the problem with Goniopora (and lots of other stuff) is that we don't know what they need to survive in captivity, so checking tank parameters is kind of a waste of time. some live, most dont, and very few make it past a year.

From what I remember they're found in lagoon type settings so they like a high nutrient system with moderate lighting and flow. I had one that lasted a year and won't buy one again until we know more about them. It should be noted that the reddish colored ones seem to be hardier than the greens (based on hobbyists who have them), but this may just be internet-chatter.
