Glad to hear it homie! Most likely sometime over sprind break I'll come by to check the tank out again .

As for husbandry, you think the siphoning of the deeper patches of sand every two weeks could have something to do with SPS staying brown? I've been doing 5g bi weeklys and ~20g changes at the end of the month. I've siphoned out alot of the sand from the front of the tank where it kept on building up, maybe its releasing something into the water??

I see you've got your thinking cap on :D...it could be depending if the pockets are deep enough i.e. <3 inches, next time you take some out take a whiff of it..lol if you smell egg then youve got some hydrogen sulfide building up and that will def. brown things out.

Another thing, Mg is prbly pretty low in your tank, Kalk precipitates Mg, and your SPS inhale it, if your not actively dosing and testing you can have pH and Alk/ Ca fluctuations. And as it been said SPS= Stability Promotes Success, this can be a pretty big factor in your SPS staying "chocolate"..lol

Got ya, the pocket(keeps rebuilding) that I keep sucking out does smell like some nausty sh!t!!!!! Mother made me take a shower :irked: Thinking cap is semi-on. Guess the morning just puts me in the thinking mood. Stablity could be a problem, cause I really hardly ever test(You know this).

As for the fish, they just got popped into the tank yesterday, think it would still have something to do with a tank full of brownies ???? And the algae blennies the biggest fish and he's not even that big.

Continue Reef Sensei and SpS PimP, helps reallly appreciated

Wait a minute!!! Andres, are you implying that, in newly laid sand, hydrogen sulfide will begin to accumulate in 2 weeks time?

Also, Kris, you've been siphoning sand for several water changes now, which smells nasty enough for Mom to order a mandatory shower, and are wondering about brown SPS?

GO BB!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!

lol ;):D

your fish should be ok, no 10 inch tangs or anything right? they'll crap yeah but theres small and it makes it more manageable bio-loadwise. (word?) However, do try to find a way to keep crap from settling if you can, also get into a habit of blasting your rocks everynight if possible, (supposedly theres micro fauna that SPS love to eat when there massively polyping at night, yummm midnite snack) and itll get crap suspended to get into the filter sock(you are using it right?) double whammy:)

Other than that get a CR a pH probe some dolomite and your set...stingnyc is sellin a sweet lil CR at a great price

Lol....that would be a perfect world but for now just keep on your levels every week to a few days w/ Mg, at least for the beginning until you get used to your tanks consumption then itll be second nature on what and how much to dose

Also, if your smelling rank sh!t take the bed out slowly every week or so, or take it all out quick followed by a large WC 30-40%. if you wanna keep a SSB (WHY?!?!?) your gonna have to be actively removing and replenishing from here on.

I think ive rambled on for enough time now :icon16:

anything else troubling you grasshopper?

Well its getting decreasly worse but I siphon like 3 weeks in between since the last time, the cyano had come back in that one spot so I let it go for a few weeks to see if it would clear up. I never ended up using any of the products to clear it up. The first time was definately worse than the others but it still does smell. I shoulda took some pics before I took it out. I constant have bubbles coming up from under a patch thats hard to reach for me(under a rock). It still smells though, even after just a few weeks =\.

What ya wondering about the brown sps?

Still using panty hoses :D....lol...You've gotta come over and see the new flow set up. Pretty much if i take outall the sand I guarantee myself a rock slide. The sand down to almost nothing in some places and some parts of the tank are even showing glass. Flows pretty good in the tank, probably no where near as much as yours but still good. I changed things around yesterday as you saw to make the damn seio less seeable.

Tanks just hit the 5 month mark maybe 1 or 2 weeks ago. Lots of the coral haven't been in here too long. Although there is growth(mostly encrusting with everything) i was hoping everything was in wack.

i think my pics are over browning everything. :(

That I know, but I thought the hydrogen sulfide would only be generated in a DSB . I didn't know it could still happen in a SSB, which was constantly getting rearranged by his flow. I guess I learn something new every day.

It was actually from another reefers tank but I did wash it out heavily when I got it. So it was basically dead sand to start with 5 months ago. Dirt was still left it in but I don't think it was much.

Oh yea I do the basting the rocks to get crap out. I get sand storms everynow and then so the rocks are pretty clean.

Ditto but it does happen, Lovin' the pic. It does get deep in that one spot. Look back on this thread to the pics where you could see the cyano on my sand :(

Deanos,
thats why some people believe the SSB can be worse than DSB since there is a shorter "fuse" what would take years to creep in a DSB can take a few months in a SSB, thats why I recomend only having enough so you can remove and replenish.

thats whyI cut the fuse..lol

Hmmmmphhh on this I shall let you know. I think that big piles behind the rock work would be more of a problem. Thing is, is that its almost like mission impossible to get back there.

Kris one stupid question. why so many water changes. during 1 month. i think you would shock the corals less if you did 1 lets say 15 or 20 gallon a month. but hey your tank looks great so who am i to tell ya what to do. lolz. keep up the great work kid. lets get some color back in there little coral lives.
