The crud is back. Can any one id this stuff? Cyano? Diatoms? Dinos?
I'm stumped, went away for a few days and the stuff came back, though not stringy like it was before. Thanks
It looks like some sort of dino or cyano, not sure exactly what kind.I would manually remove as much as possible, gfo(maybe change if its not brand new),carbon can't hurt, water changes, make sure your main parameters are in check.
Ok. Had some trouble with the rodi this weekend so I pull the carbon block and it looks like this. Is this normal? I replaced all the filters except the membrane when I set up the tank. I'm wondering if this could be the cause of my swamp.
I tapped into my house water off the cold water line that runs my washing machine, shouldn't be a problem right? I've run poly filters and they all come up brown but no metals. Po4 still reading zero. Any thoughts appreciated!
Ok, so changed gfo yesterday and put it back online. 30 gallon water change this morning and things are already looking better. Thanks to oh207 for hooking me up with the membrane and pre filters. So I did some research on my water district last night and 6 weeks ago they started some water main work 2 blocks away from my house. Finished a week ago, unbelievable! I think the crud got into my rodi and stuck there, make any sense? After 2 years of reeding you would think I'd test my tds but since the filters were new and po4 was reading zero it never crossed my mind. I'll be checking it from now on whenever I make water. Hopefully this was my problem.
The carbon on your DI is normal. Usually it should affect your first filter than if you don't change that than it goes on carbon. See if you can test your phosphate with other tester. Even though your level reading zero. Nutrients are high. Let us know if in two days it gets worst. I found out the more water changes more diatom and more nutrients are present. It's best to remove the stuff by siphoning water out but filter it through filter sock. Than place back same water. Just make sure your DI is running 0 on TDS meter. Hook up sounds good. I been adding Micro lift bacteria seems to keep it at check. Keep running GFO with carbon too. Do less water changes for this month and see if you see a decrease. You can also lessen the amount of light and you will see at night you see less.
I am running gfo and rox carbon. The three pre filters in my rodi were all rust colored. This is normal? I've changed them before and never saw them look this bad. The tds from my kitchen sink is 67, didn't think that was too bad. I'll definitely keep a close watch on the tds now. Thanks for the reply. Oh I also ordered a bunch of sediment filters and carbon blocks for backup.
Pic updates, tank is looking much better. Algae seems to be almost fully gone. Some nice frags looking good so far. Hopefully that stuff is gone for good.
Some update pics. Tank is finally doing well. Starting to see some growth and color is improving. Pulled the filter socks, I think they were contaminating the tank from washing them in the he washing machine(thanks duke62). Also raised the nitrates a bit and switched to kessils.
It's been a while, tank is finally starting to take off after numerous problems. Running biopellets now and back to an ati 8x54w fixture with Reefbrite mounted. Some pics
Thanks. Just started dosing fuel. My no3 has dropped to zero after losing most of my fish a few weeks ago so now I'm dosing fuel. Running cal reactor for alk and cal, keeping it nice and steady.
3 months growth on milka
2 months for reefgen pink Mille, starting to grow now
