It could be so many different things. You're better off providing VERY detailed information about your system in hopes of getting a more accurate response.

My system consists of a closed loop with an outdoor chiller and four power heads so flow should not be a problem. Calcium reactor, kalkwasser reactor, I run a reactor to keep phosphates low 0.03 alkalinity is at 9dkh strontium, magnesium are dosed by ghi doser and I run four 54 watt attinics with two 400 watts radiums

The main culprits are usually rise in phosphates, an alk swing or pests such as redbugs or acro eating flatworms. Unfortunately Ive also been the victim of, "stn for no reason". Sometimes it stops, the coral heals itself and all is well, sometimes not so much. For more details post up some pics and some more details about the system.

x2...I have had an acro just RTN or STN for no reason that I can determine, but when it is wide spread those are usually the main culprits...

STN is maddening. It makes me want to throw it all in the trash some days. Lack of light is a possibility, but you'd notice issues with color long before stn. Pests are always a possibility. Turn off your powerheads, remove a couple of the affected pieces and dip and take a peak.

One the most annoying things bout sps is they don't rtn the min something is wrong it usually a few days later so it can be so hard to determine what the problem is!

R u carbon dosing in any way?? Did u change carbon or phosban recently? R u running temp controller ? Those halides can warm up a tank pretty good !

Gotta say for me rtn has always been an alk issue ive had bugs b4 and that's usually more brown out loss of polyp extention thing for me rtn stn always been related to alk swing or alk just too high while carbon dosing one other thing that's gotten me is temp too high too low !
First things first check all parameters every one make sure they r where they supposed too be frag any coral that r stn ! If parameters r good do sm wc
Sometimes this just happens part the game I guess I'm hoping my next tank I will finally get it right

I think then my problem is that I was carbon dosing and my alk was to high for carbon dosing as I read on few threads so I have to rely on gfo and water changes which is fine by me especially if it is safer. Thank you all for your help

I've tried carbon dosing every which way and had success for a while but eventually my alk slides above 8 I start getting stn carbon dosing works but for me its too much work !!!
I feel like carbon dosing and sps is for the guys that have at least an hr a day to work on tank if ur like me work baby wife new house ....... Carbon dosing a bad idea In my experience just needs to be tweaked all the time and that alk dosnt stay between 7.5-7.9
Steady I have issues! Now to the guys reading this saying I keep my alk stable all day for weeks on end ! That's great but what's ur demand when u just have a bunch of frags demand is low ur sps look / grow awesome after bout a yr ur alk/cal demand starts to grow like crazy this is where the issues start !!!!

I have been victim of the STN for "no reason" as well. I had a bout last month on 5 frags. Raising alk from 8dkh to 10dkh seemed to have fixed the problem. I didn't change anything else. I don't carbon dose.

Really?? Every time I'm carbondosing and alk creeps up I get big problems!! I wonder if there is another variable I'm not taking into account !! Also vinegar does seem to be more forgiving then other carbon sources no science behind that claim just my experience

Kres how are you adding the 90mls of vinegar? Dosing pump? I really have to check out what you have going on. Is your growth VERY fast?
