Just make sure what acrylic they use. Sometimes some manufacturers used extruded while another uses cast.
Although it's hard to tell the difference sometimes from photos, the cast is much sturdier.

There is a 3 year warranty with pumps dealing with main motor problems and not parts (1 year). I guess if you have your receipt or somehow a credit card receipt of your purchase, they Mag Mfg will fix it.

What I know is Halimeda turns white when the lights are off, possibly by it's pigments. Also, a good calcium level helps in it's growth. If it's truly dead, then yes discard it.
