  1. Saltwater Aeration

Steve (SPC), don't worry, this does not go unnoticed. I have not gone away, just reading...watching, and enjoying the responses. Problem is, I am not sure that I am any clearer in my mind than before. Randy made a good comment on the precipitation of insoluble materials. Sounds like...
  2. Saltwater Aeration

Yes, I have heard many an "expert" recommend aeration, but have yet to hear the reason accompanied by any facts or backup. I guess that's what I am looking for. My success with reefkeeping is based on learning the science, mainly, and I have never learned the real reason for the aeration...
  3. Saltwater Aeration

What are the consequences with not aerating your saltwater mix for 24 hours prior to adding it to your tank? Is there any real danger here? I have repeatedly heard not to mix and pour without letting your saltwater sit at least overnight, but no one seems to really pinpoint the effects on...
  4. I'm so excited

What a beautiful fish! I assume you have a fish only tank. How big is the tank? Good luck, McReef
  5. Yet another fish suggestion/opinion needed

Although some people have reported coral nipping problems with the pygmy angels, most do not. Personally, the Fireball and Flameback angels are my favorite because of their beauty, hardiness, and personality. Great fish for a reef! The Fireball, Potters and Coral Beauty may be flashier, but...
  6. Saltwater Aeration

Yeah, my temp and SG is always the same as the main tank...without aeration...no ill effects that I can see for approx 4 yrs. Still, nothing difinitive... Thanks again!
  7. Moving a tank???

Assuming their setup is cycled... You should not have a problem. I totally agree not to add any additional livestock until you are sure there will not be a cycle. Good luck! McReef
  8. Tip on Feeding Bubble Coral

Yeah, Modo, mine will eat anything, as well. It is a white bubble. I think it especially likes silversides in the morning! Good luck, McReef
  9. Cheapest Place To Buy B-ionic?

Hey! Who has tried (besides me) the Two Little Fishes version of the 2-part alk/calcium? Not only did I find it A LOT less expensive (I did not have to add nearly as much to achieve results), it seems to perform the same as the B-Ionic! For those of us with large tanks or a small budget, the...
  10. Fish for New Reef tank?

I do not know about the Catfish...sorry. I would start by adding fish that are relatively small, hardy, inexpensive, not agressive by nature, and will eat a variety of foods. I know that sounds like a lot of constraints, but that includes many different fish! An important question: Will this...
  11. Dumbest Thing you Have ever Done...

I have NEVER done anything dumb. It's always the fault of my water, plumbing, equipment, fish, corals, or inverts.
  12. My 220g after 3months PICS

Do you have any shots of the whole tank?
  13. Smallest tank for Tangs

Kudos to Scott Passe, as well, for the "Greyhound in a kennel" comment. That said, my experience with the Yellow Tang is that it is less of a "swimmer" than a Sailfin Tang (spent more of it's time grazing than swimming the length of the tank like the Sailfin would). Any thoughts? Maybe that...
  14. help my tang has ick

If you do not like shrimp, or have a predator in the tank, try renting a UV sterilizer from your LFS. 3-4 weeks and your ich will be gone. Good luck, McReef
  15. Advanced Aquarist's author list: now public!

I cannot wait! I started a post about a month ago asking everyone about a truly comprehensive magazine! Thanks, McReef
  16. Ideas for controlling the green stuff

When you say "it looks like a refugium", do you mean that you're growing a ton of macroalgae? Or is your problem diatoms...or hair algae? Also. who's your LFS? McReef
  17. Hair Algae?

I have seen sponges that are white like that. If it is growing off your live rock, there is a great chance it is something good. When stuff I cannot necessarily identify starts growing off my live rock, I consider it a sign that things are thriving. Good luck! McReef
  18. Double pump??

I have a Little Giant 4 running the return of my 225 gal reef from approximately 4.5 feet below. I would like to increase the flow at least 50%. If I add another similar pump IN-LINE with the first, will this significantly improve the gph at the return? Thanks for the advice! McReef
  19. Am I ready ??

Arguments for adding them separately would be: to minimize the initial bioload increase (although with a 155gal, this is a minimal risk), and to make sure that one has enough room before adding another. Whereas, one argument for adding at the same time would be to try and keep one tang from...
  20. Alge Bloom

Also, Nitrates do not seem high to me at 10-20ppm, but it never hurts to bring them down for algae control!
