Eric,
I understand the definitions of both(from the chat, thank you) but having trouble applying them to my coral in the course project. Could you give an example of a coral and how to apply?

The phylogeny of corallimorphs shows them to be descended from stony corals and not the other way around. Corallimorphs have no geological history as they are soft bodied. Thus, phylogeny depends on non-fossil studies. However, some corals with a fossil history can have this used in establishing their phylogeny.
