Soft Corals and Sea Fans: a comprehensive guide to indo-pacific coral reefs by K. Fabricius and P. Alderslade should be available from The Australian Institute of Marine Science around the end of this month. AIMS is the publisher of Corals of the World and Charlie Veron is the Chief Research Scientist there. Charlie mentions this book in Corals of the World.

The price shown is for Australian purchasers and I expect they will show the OS price soon.

Will anyone in the US be selling this or will we have to get it from AIMS?

I'm sure Amazon.com and the other internet superstores will eventually carry it. However, if I were you I'd purchase it thru AIMS because it will be cheaper because of the favorable exchange rate. As of today, $55.00 AUD (Australia Dollars) = $26.8712 USD (United States Dollars). Even w/ $5 to $10 AUD in shipping and handling it's going to be cheaper to get it that way than to get it from Amazon.com, etc...

Did you call to order it? I've never called internationally before.

Janna,
Country code for Australia is 61, so you will want to dial 011 61 7 47534409 or 011 61 7 47534264. The '+' in front of the number indicates that is the international number. Unfortunately, they didn't explain to drop the '0' from the area code.

Country code 43 is for Austria - that is in Europe and they don't have any coral reefs.

You also have to account for the different timezone. Assuming Iowa is Central Daylight Time, and you are going to call AIMS between 9am and 5pm local time here, you will need to dial between 6pm and 2am. For Eastern Daylight Time, you would need to call between 7pm and 3am.

Thanks ATJ, I appreciate your help. Stupid me I looked at Austria in the phone book instead of Australia, but still I would have dialed it wrong anyway since no one explains about that 0. I will call them this evening. I'm glad you wrote exactly how I needed to dial, saves me some frustration of doing it wrong over and over. I wonder how much the call will actually cost? Thanks again.

If you have a good LD company, the call cost shouldn't be much at all. Calling the US from Oz is very cheap - something like AU$0.20/min - but I think US to Oz is more, but not much more. Whenever I'm in the US I use a calling card that gets me the Oz to US rate.

It's easy to order it from Wendy Ellery @ AIMS via email. I did it last night

after reading ATJ's post. Thanks ATJ.

It's $55Australian, and this includes shipping. It's expected out in late May or early June.

Wendy's email is: [email protected]

Dennis,
Are you sure the AU$55 includes shipping to the US? The way I read that it was only shipping within Australia. I know they are only shipping by snail mail, but it may cost more to ship to the US and it will probably take 6-12 weeks.

Looks like you can mail in your order, call it in, or fax it in:
http://www.aims.gov.au/pages/facilities/bookshop/bs-how-to%20order.html

I probably will either fax it or call it in as I will use my credit card to purchase the book. If you use your credit card you will get the best exchange rate as it's updated daily for your credit card.

Heh, I've never phoned internationally either so this will be a new experience for me as well... This makes me think of that episode where Bart Simpson called Australia to have a little boy check to see which way his toilet swirled when it flushed...rofl

Well I tried calling and they said it wasn't a valid number, this is what I did...I dialed 011 to get out of the country, 43 which is Australia's country code and then the number listed...did I do something wrong?

I ordered the EIS vol 7 and 8 from Andrew isles over the computer without actually speaking to anyone and have had wonderful results. The EIS Vol 7 was $60.00AU plus $30.00AU for shipping Via Airmail which only took 3 days to get from Melbourne, AU to Wellford, SC, usa. Altogether it was around $45(US) for the book, and that was less than Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com were asking for just the book, much less getting it to me quickly... http://www.AndrewIsles.com

My copy just arrived and the book looks great. It has some introductory chapters on biology and ecology of soft corals, including feeding. It then gives a good description of each genus including photographs, habitat and distribution information.

While the book does include an overview of keeping soft corals in tanks it is not aimed directly at the aquarist. However, much of a corals aquarium requirements can be derived from the habitat information.

An excellent book.
