Twenty week old Hippocampus erectus, Southern race -- these are NOT the same as our local Seahorse species. Please leave those where you find them. They do not do well in captivity.

My brood stock comes from Todd Gardner of Long Island Aqaurium. If you've seen the Seahorse display out there, mine are the same as those. Even Todd gave up on keeping our local race of erectus -- the Southerns do much better in aquariums.

All seahorse species, worldwide, are listed under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Appendix II species are considered "threatened." "Theatened" means not yet qualifying for Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable now, but is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.

ERGO... SUPPORT CAPTIVE BREEDING! (And that goes for ALL marine fish.)

My babies will do great for you. They'll eat from your fingers and wrap their tail around your finger. I'm willing to hold your hand and answer your questions after you buy them -- I'm always available via phone, or texting (numbers below).

Please do your homework first. There are a lot of misconceptions about keeping Seahorses. Here are three links with a ton of information. The first one is a quick synopsis about the species I am selling by the best breeder in the country, Dan Underwood. The other sites have more in-depth articles.

Breeding and raising these has been a long learning curve for me, with a lot of failures, but I finally now have a batch of beautiful and healthy Juvi ponies ready to go to new homes (they're 2 1/2 to 3 inches). You can view them in real time on my web cam:

http://grippocam.viewnetcam.com:5000
user name = seahorse
password = erectus
(first time accessing you may need to install a Pansonic active-x control)
It's on 24 hours, but the best time to tune in is around 1pm, feeding time. (Please note that there are some runts in this litter -- the size difference amazes me! I simply didn't have the heart to cull them.)

They eat frozen Mysis shrimp, both PE brand and Hikari brand -- and you should alternate both because each has a different nutritional profile.

Price is $60/pair -- but they're not yet sexable, a "pair" = two. These are social animals and I won't sell just one.

Pickup only in Hicksville, Long Island.

To quote Josh Saul: "My cost to raise these fish was astronomical so I am trying to recoup a little money to cover another batch. I am selling them at this price only once, next time they will either go to a vendor or cost slightly more." -- Josh Saul, 09-13-2010,

LOL -- I saved this knowing I'd someday have a use for this quote!!!!!

One day I would love to have a seahorse tank. Thanks for the informative posts, I've learned a lot today about what it will take one day when I'm ready... I'd love to see your setup one day, I'm in Bellmore so not far...

Thanks everyone for your nice comments.

I've had some questions asking about safe tankmates for Seahorses. Some of the safest are simply snails and Peppermint Shrimp. As far as fish and corals are concerned, please refer to the Tankmates Guide on the fusedjaw.com web site, and another important site I neglected to mention in my original post: http://seahorse.org/ -- click on Library, and then Tankmates Guide.

Ok... so.... I joined MR in Oct 2009, and this is my first For Sale post. So I guess it's only right that I also give it my very first BUMP! LOL

Hello?... Sea Ponies... not exactly flying out the door! LOL

Yeah, I know, you guys are more into corals than fish -- and my ponies are so much more than "just fish." I probably ought to advertise in some kind of "pets for sale" forum. J/K, don't want any totally clueless buyers either.

Anyhoo... still about 40 beauties available. If they don't sell I guess it's that old Jaws saying: "You're gonna need a bigger TANK!"

great job george.
how often do you feed these guys? at what temperature do you have them in?
i had a pair for about 3 yrs. but didn't get anymore after they passed because it was tough trying to feed them more than once a day....had to rely on my wife to feed them when i'm at work.
i'm so tempted though. i'd like to check them out next time i visit jimmy and/or thane in hicksville.

In response to the last three posts...

Tom, you're welcome to stop by whenever you're in the area.

I feed two to three times a day -- two is the minimum, once per day is not enough for Seahorses because they have a short digestive tract.

I have neither a heater or chiller on the baby tank, and it stays around 72 to 73. Todd at LI Aqaurium keeps his at 75. Really, the cooler, the better within the 70s range, because a nasty bacteria called vibrio proliferates the higher you go. Low 70s is best, and anything above 75 is asking for trouble.

They're very good eaters! You'd be amazed at how fast they can swim to the front of the tank when they see you coming to feed them.

What do you feed them?

From my original post:

They eat frozen Mysis shrimp, both PE brand and Hikari brand -- and you should alternate both because each has a different nutritional profile.

Do not feed Brine Shrimp, either live or frozen. First, BS are loaded with harmful bacteria, and, second, they are nutritionally useless.
