PH is at 7.8 in the morning, 8.2 after the photoperiod.

Should I drip dose pickling lime as a top off?

Thanks

What if the PH comes down to 7.5?

Are you just speculating or has it dropped this low?

Many folks run a sump, and over that sump they have a light that is on when their main tank lights are off (as in overnight usually). This helps keep the PH fairly stable. It is very common to see the variation you originally asked about.

Another thing that helps increase your PH is opening a window and allowing some fresh air into your fish tank area. Some folks go as far as plumbing the air intake hose on their skimmers to a window to capture the outdoor air even more.

PH is affected greatly by the air in the room and the ability of the tank to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen. As Greenycrew mentions - surface agitation is critical to this exchange.

Do you have glass covers on your tank?

thats normal, i beleive if you have a sump and alternate the lights you can keep the ph up. Meaning when your lights go out, your sump lights go on, you should still retain the ph level, someone correct me if i am wrong.

I have a strong feeling that your PH goes down to 7.5 when your DTL light goes off.Again this is normal, even if you have a refugium with 24/7 lighting your PH will still drop significantly.Mine drop to about 7.7 when the lights are off and about 8.2 during the day.If your animals are doing fine and the PH is at 8.2 leave the tank alone before you screw it up .BTW do some reading on the PH process now that you're on the subject.

Your ph shift is common for reef tanks. If you have a sump or fuge you should run the lights on an opposite schedule from the main tank. this will help stabilize the ph. after about 1 week running this way check you ph and adjust accordingly. Surface agitation is always a good idea. You re right when you say you want to make a stable environment too many people assume because its normal or common in a tank its the right way. It shouldn't hurt anything but when its done correctly the results are better

What are you talking about the PH in the sea and ocean is not stable it goes up and down the same way it does in your reef or fish tank.Read Dynamic Aquaria Building Living Ecosystems Sec.Ed.

When someone does have to adjust PH, they MUST know how to do it correctly. Not a good blanket suggestion to make to someone new to the hobby. You can kill a fish faster by a PH adjustment than you can by almost anything else you can do to a tank.
If his swing is 7.8 - 8.2 night/day, he isn't far off. Any adjustments he needs made can most likely be executed by a water change.

There is an huge difference between normal and common. There are also numerous ways of doing certain things different ways, none of which are wrong.
