I've got a 30 gallon tank over a 10 gallon sump. The tank has a HoB overflow, and I'm using a Fluval 304 as the return pump. I know: problems.

Air accumulates at the top of the U tube on the overflow, causing it to slowly lose siphon. This is merely must-refill-the-tube-twice-a-week-annoying and not flood-the-room annoying because, fortunately :irked:, air accumulates in the Fluval, causing it to lose pumping power. The result is an algae/cyano bloom in the tank and pristene water in the sump. I need to fix this.

My plan is to drill a small hole at the top of the overflow U tube and attach something like an Aqua Lifter Pump. This should prevent keep the siphon going right?

I also need to replace the Fluval. What pump should I use? It needs to push water 41 inches upwards, and the U-tube is 3cm across.

Any advice would definitely be appreciated.

Thanks!

You are getting air bubbles because your pump is not enough or your overflow box is too big....... I use an overflow box and went through the same issue which is now resolved...... My overflow box NEVER loose's siphon ! I feel 100% safe with it...

i did this. drilling a hole in the u tube will work and you dont need a pump however I recommend it for restarting the siphon unless you really like the taste of saltwater. When you shut your return pump off the small airline hose will siphon the water out of the u-tube and break the siphon. i just hook it up to the aqualifter that is my top off pump and turn the main pump back on. the level gets just low enought to trigger the ATO to start pumping (now connected to the tube attached to the u tube) and it restarts the main siphon just before the tank begins to overflow. then i unplug it from the aqualifter and just let gravity do its work. The whole thing is stupid and annoying and Iwould recommend that you just buy yourself an eheim 1250 and be done with it.

+1.
get a stronger pump. you don't need to drill holes.
