Nitrate Problem , HELP PLEASE ...

Dump the bio balls if you have more than 100 lbs of live rock and sand. I heard to do it slowly, but I recently removed all bio balls at once and my nitrates (which constantly sat at 20) dropped to 5 and I havent noticed any negative effects of removing the bio balls. Look into the Berlin method of filtration. I am now a believer that any type of filter media and live rock kind of counteract eachother and become nitrate breeding grounds. Make sure you are running carbon.

get rid of the bio-balls was a wize disicion.
In my system ( Berlin Method) there is only a skimmer in my sump and a PO4 killer(change after 3-4 weeks). Thats all... .Also no different parts in my sump, just an automatic levelholder.

I have 120 gal with a naso,yellow,orange shoulder tangs,emperor angel,2 heniochus,coris wrasse,11 blue green cromis and many disc anemones.I feed every other day and change 50 to 60 gals a mounth to keep the nitrate at an accepteble range.I just added a skimmer i had in closet for over a year. I
