does HOME DEPOT suck?

trying to build a 20 gallon sump ... went to home depot on 23rd street and the seem to have nothing ... very thin plexiglass and no plumbing ... their smallest pvc piping was 1 1/4" ... am i just not finding the right stuff in the store? can anybody direct to a place in manhattan i CAN buy the right stuff for my 20 gallon refugium sump ... thanks so much

Try a plumbing store or a regular hardware store. If you want acrylic try a glass shop, for baffles a glass shop is perfect.

The 23rd street home depot is a joke if you need lumber or p.v.c.

first off dont use the acrylic they sell for a sump, it will brittle and crack and if you have a glass tank you can use the acrylic anyways, they sell plates of glass or atleast mine does and that where i got it and silicone to build my 10g sump bought a tank added baffles, did it all yesterday and under tank now

Home Depot on 23rd st isnt the best place to go. They are not as large as the home depot like Northern blvd or Rockaway Blvd. in queens.
if u want some plexi and plastics in manhattan, go to chinatown. There are tons of hardware/plastic shops there on canal st.

HD does suck......never have anything in stock or anyone to help you find anything, you might have better luck at a local hardware store

The Home Depots in Manhattan are more of an accessory place that anything else. If you are looking for accent stuff (like door knobs, shower heads etc.) the Manhattan HDs are OK. But if you are looking for building materials, you have to at least go the other Boros of the city.

Chinatown isn't the same as it was.

There used to be places in China town, but I went looking for one and could not find it. It's just not there any more. Pearl Paints might have something - but it would be fairly expensive.

I know glass stores sell plexiglass, but it won't be cheap either.

Couldn't agree with you more!!! The reason the 1st.generation of HD's associates were so much better then the ones they have now is the pay. The 1st. gen. were being payed their worth, but then HD canged ownership. The new owners are more interested in their pockets, then the value of their business. For example; where in the past an associate would have started at $25 per hour, now they start at around $8 - 9. Add that to a bunch of young kids being hired with little to no benefits, understaffing in the interest of saving a buck, you end up with employees that are frustrated, and unhappy. I should know. I was one of their kitchen designers a few years back. Shifts were rotated; when ever I worked closing hours I would be the only designer from 7PM to 12AM, the busiest hours for those after work shoppers. Design kit.& baths, do special orders for the plumbing dept., tend to the faucets & stock bath & kitchen supplies, on and on.... So it was a catch 22, you try to do the best you could. Management could careless because their hands are just as tied, as the associates. And yes the HD in Manhattan is for light shopping, they don't have the room the outer boroughs do..

For plumbing supplies, if you don't mine driving to Brooklyn, the Lowe's right by the BQE has lots of stuffs even HD doesn't have. I don't know if they have any acrylic or plexiglass. Julio's Plastics in queens is where I got the acrylic for my custum DIY sump. He'll cut it for you whatever size you want and drill it for you. Price is very reasonable also.

thanks u guys ... i live in hells kitchen, which turned out to be, once i poked around, land of construction goods ... it ends up i live right next door to a glass place on 54 and 9 and got the 12x12 baffles cut for 6 bucks a piece and then, amongst the hardware stores on every other corner, found a great one with all the pvc pipings and fittings and nylon screws and bolts i ever wanted ... i'm also told there is a mega lumber, plumbing supply store on 46 and 11th, but haven't checked it out ... i've never posted a thread that has had more than one page in repsonses ...
