You are probably sick of hearing my tank questions... but here goes another one.... I still have faith in you guys!!.lol

29g... about 20g sump...

I'm going to do a closed loop system with a wavemaker.. that way i can keep my sump at a low flow and still have alot of water movement in the tank..

I was thinking 150-200gph in the sump.. and 500gph for the wavemaker/closed loop...

What do you guys think.. Is that enough or bigger??/....

If you think is ok.. or if you dont... pls recommend what pumps I should get... One of them has to be an In-line pump (500gph) and the other one can be submersible(200gph)

Pls advise!!.. thanks!!!

what kind of wavemaker is that? a SQWD? if so, you better make it so you can service it easily..flexible pipes and hose clamps maybe.

and again-
if you use a 150-200 gph pump for a sump return it will not push any water. i am using a 400 gph return coming 4' straight up, and making one 90 degree turn and am getting about 100-150 gallons.
if for some reason you think a larger pump is too strong, you can always choke it back, but if you buy a 200gph pump for your sump return, i'm willing to bet on you having to buy another.

here's a rough example- i use a sequence reeflo dart pump for my closed loop. that pump is 3600gph, however, by the time it goes through my wavemaker and all those turns in the pipes, it feels weaker than a koralia 4. which is 1/3 the gph.

also, if you are thinking of keeping alot of sps, the 500gph pump will not be enough. you think "500 gph- that is twice as strong as my powerheads...so it should be plenty"..but after it goes through that wavemaker and makes all those turns the pressure will be greatly diminished.

For a 29 gallon tank you don't need much turnover with the sump. Something in the 100-200 GPH range at about 4'-5' of head would be plenty. For an external pump I'd consider a PanWorld 30PX or Iwaki MD15. For a submersible, maybe an Eheim 1250. These are all quiet, reliable, energy efficient choices.

Personally I don't think I'd bother with a closed loop on such a small tank. I'd just put a small propeller pump (or two) in there. I know it's not as nice aesthetically, but it's much simpler and more energy efficient.

If you choose to do the closed loop, I would look at something like an Iwaki MD 30RLXT or comparable for the loop pump (with multiple outlets to distribute the flow).
