ALSO:

My sandbed has now turned from white to a slightly dirty color from accumulated detritus/algae growth.

Maybe a stupid question but...

sand bed is 3 inches deep...I can take a turkey bastor and stir up this sand bed with no problems correct?

This would make it nice and white again but I dun wanna release some kind of evil into the tank....

IS this ok to do?

I'm not talking ohh barely stir it up move it around...I'm talking COMPLETELY stir it up....

i think it will do your tank good to stir the sand up. as long as you do like len said and vaccuum out the nasties that you see floating afterwards.
i might throw a piece of sponge in that HOB filter before you start cleaning the gravel. or better yet, vaccuum the sand bed clean.
i have the same problem in the 30 gallon cube we have in the bedroom. i have a pretty good idea what the cause of it is though- OVER FEEDING.

Yes I was feeding twice a day 1 cube each time. Now I just do it once a day...seems to be slowing the accumulation!

Thanks for help!
