1) do i need another pump to power the skimmer or will the built in sedra be enough?
2) i am looking at getting a maxi jet power head, but which size would be best for a 55gallon?
3) do you reccomend any particular reverse osmosis system? looking for the cheapest most effecient possible.
4)is there any other equipment i should need to get my tank started?
no the skimmer pump is made for that ASM Save your money.mine works great one day you might add the gatevalve mod to it for better adjusting.
Power heads for a 55 I get two maxi-jet 900 one in each corner as the close loop system.
I have 1200 in my 120 a 1200 it puts out alot you do want to turn up the sand and corals with with too much over kill. The return pump only needs to put back not alot a mag 5 would be good you need more flow going around in the tank not the sump.
I have it set up a to the book The Reef Aquarium by J.Charles Delbeek And Julian Sprung you do not need alot of water cycling from the sump to the tank you need it to have time for the skimmer to take the skimmate out and no filters on the return to the sump also for the raw water for the skimmer to pull more out per Anthony Calfo.
I look on the web for a R/O DI unit a 50gpd I have a Kent but was $
I would look at the sponors a compair and do a search on the web.
Test kits for water I use Salifert
Get a Refactometer for salinity on plastic ones no.
Salt I use Red Sea
A mixing container to mix the r/o water and salt with a heat and a powerhead to mix the water
Timers for the light
Bucket for the fish only no soap write on it.
I use for accumation for fish a air line and a air valve to control the waterflow
Live rock
Media
Heater i use two heater that = the size of the tank as for 55 two 150 watts
Power strip with GFI
Titanium ground probe for if a heater or pump cracks
buy some books and please read so you know what the basic is.
