Wait......

How long has the tank been cycling? Sounds to me like you are past the ammonia and on your way to finishing the cycle.

hmm that could be. WHats weird is I have one of those three month cartridges that you leave in your tank that tests ammonia, and its always stayed yellow (zero).

If you're talking about the seachem ammonia alert, we swear by ours. The slightest bit of ammonia and it starts to show light blue over the yellow. We've compared it to the salifert test long enough to know that its very accurate.

If you used cured rock, it's very possible you never got an ammonia spike. I know I never got one when I cycled my tank, even with about 10-15 pounds of uncured rock. Of course, despite the rock not being fully cured by the LFS owner's standards, I think it had very minimal die-off. Anyway, your nitrites should drop soon, and hopefully your nitrates before too much longer.
