Water changes, phosphate reduction, improved circulation and running carbon all help but making sure all your water parameters are in check certainly helps as well and skimming with a good skimmer completes the equation.

Thought maybe it was due to too much light on for too long. I turned my fuge light off for two days and there was no sign of it in there.

I read once that along with low oxygen & high phospahtes cyano proliferates when nitrates are low, is this remotely true? It makes no sense to me why low nitrates would fuel cyano growth, anyone care to try and explain?

Water quality ofcourse but this may sound contradictory to what most people will say but I bought a few giant mexican turbo snails that ate it up pretty good when I had it. Main thing to me I think is RO/DI water carbon and keeping up with water changes.

red slime remover

Do not use Ultralife red slime remover ever.
I have had a reef tank for close to 15 years and the current tank i had "key word had" was up and thriving for about 6 or 7 years.I had a red slime bloom and although I did everything possible to get rid of the slime naturally it would not go away due to the extreme bioload of corals I had in the tank combined with the fish the nutrient content in the water was probably off the charts. And although I have a ton of flow in the tank when you had as many corals as I did you get dead spots where crap forms.Anyway I used this product as per the directions actually i used 2 spoons less than it said and within 3 days I did not 1 living coral not 1.To say I am sick is a understatement ut i believe all I can do now is tell people of my woes.Luckily I have friends like Chris,Kedd, jason who have frags of alot of my corals and can get new colonies started. But anyway do not believe what anyone says and stay away from this product.

red slime remover

not that i recommend this product either. but i used it without ill effect other than not being able to run skimmer for 3 day's. so it basically defeated the purpose of it, cause my nutients shot up

Sorry for a noob advice but it has worked several times for many people who were either too lazy or had no more patience with this issue.

red slime remover is an antibiotic and should always be dosed as per the directions and no other way or you can end up facing numerous other problems (like killing most of your bio-filtration or creating a super strain of red slime immune to antibiotics). Red Slime remover can also mess with your PH and lower the oxygen levels in your tank. When you dose with this you need to make sure you have enough circulation to oxygenate the water without the use of chemical media or a protein skimmer. Like any meds it isn't a set it and forget it deal and it is never a guaranteed fix even if you do use it correctly. Otherwise Chief pretty much summed it up. Just have to do process of elimination untill you find the cause. ALL NUISANCE ALGAES ARE A SYMPTOM AND TREATING SYMPTOMS DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Address the problem and you will find your tank much easier to manage.

What role does carbon play in all of this algae breakout? I was told that all carbon does it clear cloudy water, and takes care of smelly water. Can someone please explain what carbon does and how it should be introduced into the system? I iam not using now, but will if it really helps.

Carbon reacts with certain organic and inorganic molecules in the water, thus binding them and removing them from the water column. Its basically a "controlled" (to some extent) chemical reaction. Those organic and inorganic molecules that help fuel algae blooms and foul up your tank water are removed via this chemical reaction, which, in turn, clears up your water and prevents cretain algal breakouts.

Can carbon be added in my existing phosban reactor with Rowaphos? Can I just put some into a filter bag and lay it in the sump? Does either way work better?

people do use both in the same reactor... i dont and do not recommend it whatsoever.. they both require to different flows, as you already know phosban requires a slow flow rate and carbon requires a higher flow rate...
