Liverock would be your best option, but some people have used the addition of fish.which could be a little cruel ,cause some fish will die.I would go for a combo of livesand and a good amout of liverock.this will be your best move.:usa1:

live rock. using fish is inhumane.
While i agree with Leslie, i think that thats just a matter of opinon.

I do think that its best to cycle with live rock. You could also just throw in some cured live rock to have an almost immediate cycle. On the other hand you could throw in a piece of dead shrimp and let it decay in your tank untill the cycle is completed. If you have no option, maybe you could pick a hardy fish to cycle (not the best option IMHO, but still an option).

As far as live rock goes i would just get about a pound per gallon of cured live rock. However if you get your live rock from an LFS that keeps a single fish in a 75 gallon tank filled with rock i would expect to have a mini-cycle. Go for quality LR. Usually members here on MR sell rock at a decent price. And most of the time the rock sold by members is of better quality than that of petland.....

On the fish cycle topic.

using fish = animal cruelty imo. Why make the fish go through an ammonia cycle and suffer. Just because it was noted that some survive it doesn't make it right =0)

There are other ways that don't harm live animals=0) so use them.

Sorry about beeing blunt. You'll have the same effect dropping in a dead shrimp, fish food, or using cured live rock.
