that would depend on what size tank u have n what type of corals u like to keep
I am setting up a 65 gal tank. Right now I'm going with a FOLR tank. I am going to use a Pro Clear Aquatics Premier75 sump with a Catalina Aquarium CA2200 pump. Hope this'll be enough info. I'm really not sure what kind of corals I plan to keep once I start the reef tank. Does the coral types mean that much for the skimmer I'll use?

My suggestion to you is to not put bioballs in that sump and get yourself an ASM G-3 skimmer to put in there. A quality skimmer will help you keep your nitrates down and reduce algae growth. Most of the skimmers at loe cost suck out there, do your reasearch before buying. Posting here first is always your best best.

You will see all kinds of skimmers in the "skimmer thread" on the top of the general discussion forum.

Ok so far from what I've learned here is that using the wet/dry as a sump is the way to go. That's what I'm planning, no bio balls. LR and a skimmer. And that's why I'm here so you guys can point me in the right direction for equipment.
Thanx

nope, you always triple quatriple the size of your skimmer!

In tha near future its likely that you are gonna upgrade your system, not downgrade, so spend wisely!
it becomes an investment!

Ok so if I triple the skimmer now then I upgrade to a tank size like a 125, can I still use that skimmer or do I have to get a bigger one to handle the load in the bigger tank?

If you're using LR and a skimmer (or even without a skimmer), a wet/dry will cause more problems than not. It will be great for nitrification of ammonia to nitrate, but you will likely overload the ability of your LR to complete the denitrification process, so you'll just see your nitrates rise and be completely dependent on water changes to keep levels down. It's the same reason bio balls are not recommended on reefs which have LR. For a fish only tank, a wet/dry can work as there are insufficient areas for nitrifying bacteria to colonize (also, the wet/dry maintains a high oxygen environment that nitrifying bacteria thrive on to process waste).

Stay with your LR and skimmer, and avoid the wet/dry, which will defeat the balanced system you're paying for. LR is not cheap, so you might as well use it as its intended to be used, as your bio filter.

Yes, you still do need to do water changes, but it will be a lot easier to keep your nitrates in line (along with all the other DOCs' in your system water).

Taat2d, trty sending a pm to house of fish. they have a Bremuda aquatics skimmer thats really good. When you spend a little more its winds up being well worth it in the end.

everybodys learned the hard way. buy crap in the beginning and you'll just end up junking it sooner or later. so save your money for good equipment so you wont have to upgrade again.

LR and oversized skimmer is the way to go. I agree with the previous responses about the ASM series...theyre great! I upgraded my skimmer 6 months after setting up my tank...basically got an ASM G4+ for my 135 gallone tank. THe price was great and I cant say enough about its performance! Definitely the way to go..and for a 65 gallon i agree with going for the ASM G3.
